First Braille phone debuts in UK, made using 3D printer
UK phonemaker OwnFone announced what it claims is the world first
phone for people with visual disabilities. Both the front and back
panels of the phone are made using a 3D printer, which allows for
additional customization, according to the company.
The phone is also available in a non-Braille version with the raised text on the keypad. “3D printing provides a fast and cost-effective way to create personalized Braille buttons,” says Tom Sunderland, inventor of the phone. He added that the phone can be personalized with two or four additional Braille buttons. They are pre-programmed to call friends, family, carers or the emergency services.
The Braille phone by OwnFone currently sales only in the UK and costs £60. There are a number of different color variants on offer as you can see in the photo above.
