Working Samsung Galaxy S8+ unit spotted in the wild

Image
We're definitely on a row today, even by Galaxy S8 leak standard. First a coral blue dye shot, then a size comparison and an impressively extensive list of official accessories and prices. So, once again from the top, we guess - another set of leaked shots of the Samsung Galaxy S8+ has surfaced online. Still, you might want to hold up for a bit, before you continue on your way this time around, as these are probably the most detailed and believable shots of the 6.2-inch plablet to date. The stills come from Mexico, as further proven by the handset's UI language of choice. It looks like someone over at androidmx got early access to a properly functional S8+ unit, which he then proceeded to grab a few stills of. Samsung Galaxy S8+ shots Not only do we get to marvel at the nearly edge-to-edge curved panel this time around, but there is also a small interface tour to be had. As expected, the SM-G955F sports Samsung's new Grace UX look. This time, it is

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ get sized up against other handsets on video

Image
The avalanche of Galaxy S8 content is pretty much out of control at this point. We've had rumors, leaks, live shots and renders, specs sheets and benchmarks, you name it. Even the occasional video. Now, you can add one more clip to the list, a pretty daring one, to say the least. Apparently, we have now reached a saturation point so odd that the relative size comparison footage, we have for you today, is not only of immaculate quality and not shot in an alley somewhere, but it actually looks like a proper review, more than anything else. Apparently, quite a few Chinese manufacturers are already distributing dummy S8 and S8+ units, which is what the YouTube clip features. In it, you can see the plasticky molds next to the Galaxy S7 edge, Honor V9 (or Honor 8 Pro) and the iPhone 7 pair. Setting aside the obviously dodgy quality, the dummies do seem to be precisely made in terms of dimensions. Thus, making them perfect for appreciating the great use of space Samsung h

Watch the launch films for Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Book

Image
Samsung just posted the so-called Official Launch Films for the Galaxy Tab S3 Android slate and the Galaxy Book Windows convertible. The Galaxy Tab S3 is already on pre-order in a number of countries and is even hitting the shelves in the US so the promo is just in time to generate a bit of hype. And the Galaxy Tab S3 deserves it, really - it's a great device. The Samsung Galaxy Book is another beast entirely. For starters it houses a bigger, either 10.6" or 12" display and comes with an Intel Kaby Lake processor. More importantly it runs on Windows 10, which makes it a fully functional laptop. Anyway - enjoy the video.

Samsung will disable charging on remaining Galaxy Note 7 units

Image
After limiting the charging on some Galaxy Note 7 units to 60% and outright stopping it for devices in the US, Samsung will issue a new update to end the charging of the remaining Galaxy Note 7s around the world. Samsung has reported that it has regained around 97% of Galaxy Note 7 units but it seems some are still holding on to their units. In the interest of protecting those people that Samsung will start completely disabling their charging later this month. Similar measures have been in effect in some countries like limiting the Galaxy Note 7's network connectivity. Since the Galaxy Note 7 proved to have a fatal flaw and Samsung had to pull the phablet out of the market, the Galaxy S7 edge has been working overtime to compensate for the lack of a large screen Samsung flagship. All of that is about to change next week with the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ with a 5.8" and 6.2" 18:9 screens. Thanks, Wang, for the tip! Source

Apple Store down in anticipation of today's launches: red iPhones, 9.7" iPads and more

Image
Apple was on fire this week - it unveiled the iPhone 7 (Product) Red, doubled the storage of the iPhone SE, unveiled a new, cheaper iPad 9.7, it even added more watch strap options. And predictably the Apple Store is down. You are greeted wit a “we’ll be back” message in a variety of languages. This is fitting since the red iPhone 7 will launch globally at the same hour - 3:01 pm GMT. The messages in each language list the local time in the respective country, if you can’t figure out this GMT thing. The new Apple iPad 9.7 and iPhone SE with extra storage also go on sale later today - out of the blue, Apple created a huge launch. Source (Apple Store, temporarily “down”)

Black Sheep: why it took so long to get OnePlus 3T in Midnight Black

Image
The Midnight Black color option of the OnePlus 3T seems new, it’s barely over a week old, if you count the colette limited edition. However, the behind-the-scene video tells a very different story - Black was the original color of the OnePlus 3. It goes back to the beginning - the OnePlus One and its signature Sandstone Black. Its successor also featured Sandstone, but OnePlus heard a growing voice in the community that asked for an aluminum body. In a poll, aluminum outweighed Sandstone. And so the design team set out to make a black aluminum OnePlus 3. Unfortunately, yield proved low as getting a perfect black was tricky. Especially matte black, since the designers did not want a fingerprint mess that glossy black backs inevitably become. Even Midnight Black features an anti-fingerprint coating. Currently, only 600 Gunmetal bodies out of 1,000 produced pass inspection but the numbers were much worse for the black model - 400 out of 1,000. It took over a year

Design sketch shows Nokia flagship with a dual camera and Zeiss lens

Image
Reliable leakster Nokibar got hold of design sketches of a high-end Nokia handset - one with a Zeiss-branded dual camera. HMD already hinted that it might partner up with Zeiss, but this model will kill two birds with one stone - a return to quality optics and a jump into the growing dual camera segment. Nokias of the past have had some of the most innovative cameras, but strangely, for all the oddball designs we’ve seen, none ever had dual cameras. Anyway, the phone itself follows the same design language as the Nokia 6, 5 and 3. Nokibar took the time to redraw the design sketches, from a different perspective. Keep in mind that a design sketch is just a first step - probably many were made but only few will be sent to the manufacturing plant. Design sketch of a dual-camera Nokia • Nokibar's sketch There have been multiple leaks about Snapdragon 835 power inside the upcoming Nokia flagships, but that’s not a requirement for dual cameras. And HMD has p

As promised at its CES announcement, the UP3218K UltraSharp has a whopping $5,000 price tag. LG says unlocked G6 coming soon to US

Image
If you are in the United States and are waiting for the LG G6 to be made available in unlocked form, you might not have to wait for long. A quick look at the company's US website reveals unlocked LG G6 is listed as "coming soon." Sadly, an exact date isn't yet known. Also, not known is the price tag unlocked G6 will carry. But we expect these details to surface sooner than later. As for carrier variants, while most of them are available to pre-order, T-Mobile has already started shipping some pre-orders. Source

Report says Samsung Galaxy S8 pre-orders in Europe will go live on unveiling day

Image
While Galaxy S8 pre-orders in its home country are set for April 7, Samsung will start accepting pre-orders in Europe immediately after the device's unveiling. This information comes courtesy of a new report which says Galaxy S8 pre-orders in the Netherlands will go live on March 29. There's, however, no information on exactly when pre-orders will start shipping. The report also notes that the tech giant won't be offering any freebies to those who pre-order the phone - this, however, could be market specific. As for price, the S8 will carry €799 tag, while the S8+ will cost €899. In case you missed, there have been reports that Galaxy S8 pre-orders will arrive much earlier than store units. Via

Google fixes Bluetooth issue on Pixel devices

Image
A number of Google Pixel (and Pixel XL) users have been experiencing a Bluetooth problem that randomly caused the radio to turn off without warning, causing accessories to disconnect and proved to be most annoying while streaming music to an external speaker. Thankfully Google is issuing a fix and it will reach affected users via a Google Play Services Update. The problem first appeared around the time of Google’s release of the February Security Patch. Even the March Security Patch did not rectify the Bluetooth issue. Finally today, a fellow Googler posted in the product forum relevant to the issue that Google was pushing a server-side fix for the problem at hand. As mentioned, a Google Play Services update will gradually roll out over the next several days, so no further action will be needed from those affected as Google Play Updates happen seamlessly in the background. Are you one of these Pixel owners? Let us know how much the problem affected your Pixel

T-Mobile is already shipping pre-ordered LG G6 units

Image
Like all the carriers except Verizon, T-Mobile is releasing the LG G6 on April 7. Right? Well, sort of. The magenta "Un-carrier" seems to be intent on spoiling Verizon's exclusive launch window for the G6, by shipping pre-orders early. Verizon is going to be the first US carrier to have the G6 available, on March 30. T-Mobile, on the other hand, just started taking pre-orders for it yesterday. However, if you placed a pre-order at the magenta carrier yesterday and chose overnight shipping, you probably were met with a big surprise today. Namely, an LG G6 waiting at your doorstep. A couple of reports are already public on Reddit and Twitter of customers who went with the overnight shipping option having received their G6s already. Images such as the one you can see above are attached as proof, and T-Mobile social media operators have acknowledged the deliveries. So it's (pretty much) official - "pre"-ordering a G6 from T-Mobile is actual

Razer acquires Nextbit, the company behind the Robin cloud phone

Image
This is a really interesting case, so let’s briefly recap: Nextbit was a startup company that built a phone around a cloud feature that would allow seamless usage of apps and content that transcended between phone’s on-board storage and a complimentary cloud service, automatically. This phone would be called the Nextbit Robin. The company’s initial Kick Starter goal of $500,000 was smashed with a final pledge amount of around $1.3 million.   Visual representation of unused data being backed up and restored Fast-forward to today, a year or so after the Robin began shipping to customers, the company is being acquired by Razer. All sales of the Nextbit Robin and its accessories have already ceased. But like all great companies, Nextbit has vowed to keep a couple of promises: it will honor warranties for six more months, and Nextbit will keep supporting the Robin with software updates and security patches through February of 2018. The Nextbit brand will not

Facebook's Messenger is continuing its quest to add as many features as possible. The latest additions are reactions (which was in testing for a while) and mentions. Both of these will be rolling out across the world "in the coming days". You'll be able to react to any single message in a thread, and choose between seven different reactions to do so. To add a reaction you press and hold any message and then tap to select one of the following emojis that show up: love, smile, wow, sad, angry, yes, and no. Note that those last two ones can also easily be interpreted as "like" and "dislike", respectively, given the fact that they're styled like a thumbs up and thumbs down. While you're in a conversation, you'll see reactions to messages in the lower corner, where you get a summary of how many people reacted. Tapping on that will tell you exactly who reacted how. And when someone reacts to one of your messages, you'll get a small animation. If you don't have Messenger open, you'll get a notification telling you that someone has reacted to a message of yours. Reactions will be available for all messages - text, stickers, videos, images, GIFs, and even other emojis. And all of this works in all conversations, be they one on one or of the group type. Mentions on the other hand are handy for group chats when you want to get someone's attention. Just type the "@" symbol followed by the first few letters of that person's name or nickname. You'll get a list of people that you can pick from. Then write what you want and that participant in your chat will be notified that you've mentioned him or her. This will be achieved through a new type of notification, which lets them know that you called them out specifically. Source

Back in November of last year, Nextbit started a closed beta program for its Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Robin smartphone. Many builds and many months later, today the final form of that update is finally going out to all Nextbit Robin owners. Of course, as this is a staged rollout, it may take a while before it reaches all units in the wild. But it is coming. Once you install the new software, you'll be running Android 7.0, build 88, with the January 5, 2017 security patch level (and not a more recent one, unfortunately). As you'd expect, this version packs everything that Google built into the first Nougat iteration. Not long ago we've seen a Robin getting benchmarked with Android 7.1.1 on board, so hopefully the beta builds for that will start soon - since Nextbit promised to keep software support for the Robin alive until 2018, despite being acquired by Razer a couple of months ago. Misfit Vapor runs Android Wear 2.0, arrives in late summer for $199

Image
Back in January at CES, Misfit announced its first proper smartwatch, the Vapor. At the time though this was said to run a proprietary platform, and not Android Wear. Well, fast forward to today at Baselworld, and the company finally unveiled some more details about the Vapor - including the fact that it does run Android Wear 2.0 after all. That's perhaps not surprising given how Misfit owner Fossil is going all-in with Android Wear devices this year, but it still makes for an odd launch. Anyway, the Misfit Vapor is expected to become available in "late summer" for $199. The wearable is packing quite a few features for that price. It has a 1.39-inch fully round AMOLED touchscreen with 326ppi pixel density, an accelerometer, altimeter, gyroscope, optical heart rate sensor, GPS, and a microphone. What's more, it's got a touch-sensitive bezel that will aid in your navigation needs, letting you use Android Wear without your fingers obscuring the

Galaxy S8 and S8+ to be even more expensive than previously thought

It's been a few hours since the last Galaxy S8-related leak, so here's another one. But brace yourselves, for this one brings some bad news about the pricing of the S8 and S8+. And yes, that's even worse news than before. If you thought the previously rumored prices of €799 and €899, respectively, for the two handsets, were too high, well, it turns out that in some countries they'll be even more expensive than that. And we're talking about members of the Eurozone, which theoretically should all get the exact same prices. But no - like a few times before with mobile devices, we're apparently going to see some variation from country to country. For example, in Italy, expect the Galaxy S8 to go for €829, while the bigger S8+ should be priced at €929. Both models will be available only in black, silver, and Orchid Grey (don't call it purple or violet), at least at first. Speaking of availability, as rumored dozens of times already, the S8 duo

Samsung showcases many Gear S3-based concepts at Baselworld, including a pocket watch

Image
Baselworld is the world's biggest trade show for the watch industry, and Samsung is at Baselworld this year. The Korean company really wants you to know that it's participating in Baselworld this year, so it's announced a bunch of concepts based on the Gear S3 smartwatches. To make them, Samsung's partnered with renowned watch designer Yvan Arpa. The concepts range from interesting to vaguely interesting to outright odd. Let's see, then. We have the duo below, styled like a Gear S3, but actually using Swiss made-movements and details. Next up, a couple of smartwatches that have a "fresh take" on the bezel and overall shape. And now... a pocket watch. No, really - a Gear S3 pocket watch with an analog watch embedded in its case. Samsung calls it a "hybrid" pocket watch. If this was ever to ship, we would only have one if we'd get a smart monocle bundled with it. Finally, here's a picture of a bunch of Gear S3s

Samsung Gear S3 classic LTE escapes South Korea, is on its way to AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon

Image
A couple of months ago an LTE-capable version of Samsung's Gear S3 classic smartwatch surfaced in its home country of South Korea as an exclusive to one of the carriers over there. Fast forward to today, and this model is now officially announced for international markets. That includes the US, as you'd expect, where the new Gear S3 classic LTE will be sold by AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. So far if you were outside of Korea and wanted LTE connectivity from your Gear S3, you had to pick the sporty-looking frontier version, but that's no longer the case. Now lovers of the classic's more understated design can have their cake and eat it too. The Gear S3 classic LTE is unsurprisingly a Gear S3 classic with LTE added. Thus it features a 1.3-inch 360x360 circular AMOLED touchscreen, and it's powered by a 1 GHz dual-core CPU, aided by 768MB of RAM. You get 4GB of storage, as well as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and MST for Samsung Pay, and GPS. The watch

HMD prepares to launch the new Nokias in 120 markets simultaneously

Image
HMD wants to make up for lost time by launching its new Nokia lineup in 120 markets - simultaneously. Yep, the Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3, even the Nokia 3310 feature phone will launch in most of the world at the same time. That time is Q2 2017, according to an official from HMD. The company will not attempt to launch its phones on the same day, but likely we will see multiple launches in May. Earlier, an HMD exec said that the new Nokias will hit the market from mid-May to early June. He warned that prices might vary slightly based on local VAT. Beyond Europe, the Nokias will also launch in the US and India, where some of the units will be made. Source

LG G6 review

Image
Introduction Cutting corners - it's the story of the LG G6's life. And we mean this both literally and figuratively. Literally because its display doesn't have right angles, it's soft arcs instead. And figuratively because the G6 doesn't come with the screaming hardware on the market, but makes do with a few-months-old chipset and 'just' 4GB of RAM. What happened to 'flagship'? What happened is that LG is taking a different spin on the term. The G6 is the one that will sell the most, so they've redefined flagship to mean that. So while LG held back on equipping the phone with the latest hardware, they've focused on usability. Many will think (a few of us here as well) that's just downplaying the fact that Samsung won't let anyone use the Snapdragon 835 before the Galaxy S8 comes out, but let's face it - LG's marketing team did have to maneuver around the issue somehow. As for the ultimate in

Colorware is making limited edition iPhone 7 Plus Retro models

Image
Colorware, the company that does custom paint jobs for electronics in preset configurations or any color of your choice, has announced a new custom paintjob for the iPhone 7 Plus that gives it the retro 1984 original Macintosh look. Called just the iPhone 7 Plus Retro, the paintjob features a complete recoat of the back in the beige color scheme with dark beige stripes on the sides and the rainbow colored Apple logo. The front of the phone is black. The phone itself is a 256GB iPhone 7 Plus that is SIM-free and carrier unlocked. Now for the price. The iPhone 7 Plus Retro is expensive, as Colorware products tend to be, but especially so in this case, with a price tag of $1899. The phone will be sold for a limited time, with the first 25 being numbered. Source

Back in black: yet another set of Samsung Galaxy S8 shots leaks

Image
What we have on offer is the upcoming Galaxy S8 pair side by side. And if you happen to feel like this is not the first time you are reading this, we can't blame you, since you're not far off. We already got one of these a few days ago, only in a different color. Now, we have black units, or possible dummy models to check out. But, just so you don't get the impression that "black" is the new things here, we'll just link this other leak from a couple of days ago, or better yet this one. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ OK, now that we have all that covered, here are the two new photos. The difference in size between the 5.8-inch S8 and its 6.2-inch, S8+ sibling becomes instantly apparent. Still, we will remind you that both models do come with an unusual 18.5:9 aspect ratio. So tall, but not necessarily that wide is what Samsung was going for. As far as other info on the flagship pair goes, there is just a sea of it out there, which you can check

Google is pulling the plug on YouTube annotations on May 2

Image
In case anybody had any doubts in the past, we feel it is now pretty safe to historically name YouTube as the next big multimedia content revolution. Sure, "online video" might be a more technically correct and inclusive, but let's be real, with over a billion hours of content consumed per day, YouTube in the undisputed king. That being the case, Google's multimedia arm can't afford to take its sights off the future even for a moment. So, it only comes natural that things like annotations - an old remnant, dating back to 2008, well before the HTML5 revolution, eventually get axed. Well, the date is already set for the Annotations Editor, which will officially stop working on May 2. After that point, existing annotations on videos will still remain, but users won't be able to edit them or create new ones. The only thing left intact will be the delete functionality. And YouTube has a few fairly good reasons for you to finally get rid of t

Alleged Nokia 6 gets FCC certified

Image
A 'Nokia' branded smartphone has received certification from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States. While the listing doesn't reveal exactly which handset it is, reports say it could well be the Nokia 6. The assumption is based on the fact that the device the agency has cleared carries a model number of TA-1038, while the Nokia 6 carries a model number of TA-1000 for China. If the phone in question is indeed the Nokia 6, then it would be reasonable to assume that its US launch isn't far off. Via

Super Mario Run's Android launch slated for March 23

Image
Back in January this year, Nintendo revealed that Super Mario Run for Android will be launching this March. In line with that, the company has now confirmed that the launch is slated for March 23 (Thursday next week). The listing for the game is there on Google Play, but you cannot download it yet - there's only an option to pre-register (helpful to those who want to get launch-related alerts). The game, which launched on iOS back in December, has brought in over $50 million for the company so far. Source
