Apple Pay might land in Germany very soon

Image
Apple Pay is available in quite a few countries and territories already, but its international expansion isn't slowing down. One of the countries most rumored to get the mobile payments service has been Germany, with some mumblings from May suggesting a launch in the fall or winter. The former of those time frames seems more likely in light of new information that's surfaced today. If you're in Germany running the latest betas of iOS 11 and watchOS 4, when you set up your Apple Watch you will be presented with the screens you can see below. They tell you about Apple Pay and apparently give you the option of adding a German bank card to the service. The adding process itself fails, but the fact that this feature is now partially enabled ahead of the grand release of iOS 11 and watchOS 4 next month means we may see Apple Pay launching in Germany in September as well - perhaps very soon after the new operating system versions go live for everyone. Hype surrounding Snapchat's Spectacles seems to have died down

Image
Back in September last year, the company behind Snapchat changed its name to Snap. Reason being, the Snapchat app was no longer the only product the company was offering - a pair of sunglasses (dubbed Spectacles) were announced on the same day. Spectacles featured a built-in video camera, capable of capturing 10 second vidoes (in circular format) that can be synced with the Snapchat app. There's also an LED indicator that informs others you are recording. Snap effectively revealed during its Q1 2017 earnings that it managed to sell 64,000 units of Spectacles. And now, the company has announced its Q2 2017 earnings, revealing $8.3 million in 'other revenue,' which translates into around 41,500 units. That's a significant drop - around 35%. It's worth mentioning that the numbers reflected in Q2 earnings don't include sales through Amazon, something which started last month, as well through other third-party retailers. However, it's qu

Gear Fit 2 Pro moniker spotted on Samsung's website, Gear Sport gets FCC certified

Image
Shortly after it stopped by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the Gear Fit 2 Pro has been officially confirmed. The moniker has been spotted on the South Korean company's official website, along with the model number SM-R365. Nothing much is known about the wearable at the moment, except that it's likely to have a design similar to the standard Gear Fit 2 and could feature improved step-tracking accuracy. It's said to be made official around the same time as the Galaxy Note8. Meanwhile, in a separate but related news, a new Samsung wearable dubbed Gear Sport has been cleared by the FCC. The device carries a model number of SM-R600 and capable of monitoring heart rate. Via 1 2

Sony Xperia XZ Premium arrives in Canada on August 15, or in September

Image
Sony will release the Xperia XZ Premium in Canada soon. The device is already on sale in the US, where it's even received a $100 price cut recently. It will be out up north either on August 15, or in September. Two different reports came out on the matter today, and they don't agree on much. What is clear is that Amazon will be offering the unlocked model, and that we'll have to wait until it becomes available in order to find out how much it will cost. Given that its current price in the US, in unlocked form, is $699.99, that means it could go for CAD 899 - or even CAD 999 if we take into account that the recommended retail pricing for the US is $799. Another issue the two sources linked below don't agree with is whether the XZ Premium's fingerprint sensor will be disabled in Canada like it is in the US. As you may know already, Sony phones sold in the US have had their scanners disabled so far due to some mysterious contractual obligations pe

Official name for Android O tipped to be announced on August 21 (solar eclipse day)

Image
The official name of Google's upcoming Android operating system - currently being referred to as O - will be officially announced on August 21. The information comes courtesy of Android Police 's David Ruddock, who cited a source whose info, he say, he cannot verify. His tweets suggest he knows the name, but doesn't want to play spoilsport. Ruddock also revealed that the Mountain View, California-based company is planning a spectacle surrounding the reveal. Now, given that August 21 is a total solar eclipse day (at-least in the US, where such astronomical event was last witnessed around a century ago), it's quite possible that Google is planning something big this time around. A solar eclipse day for revealing the official name could also be a strong hint of what the name could be. Any guesses? No? Ok, lemme help you: think of what happens during a solar eclipse.   Image courtesy: NASA This, right? And here's what Android O could
