Tomb Raider Review

A new dawn for Lara. We’ve seen Lara Croft in many forms over the years, from busty action-heroine to Atlantean explorer to wise-cracking aristocrat. But we’ve never seen her like this before. Crystal Dynamics' new Tomb Raider sees a young Lara on her first expedition, shipwrecked and stranded on an island bristling with danger, pushed to the limits of her ingenuity and will to survive. Over the course of the game we see this intelligent, resourceful young woman become something closer to the Lara Croft we know, fearless in the face of danger. It is a greatly successful origin story, a series reboot that feels both authentic and hugely exciting. Tomb Raider is a little self-indulgent at the beginning – the first hour is a sequence of carefully scripted set-pieces and, yes, a cavalcade of button-mashing QTEs. But it's all for the sake of character development, and Tomb Raider is so good at this that you'll forgive the strict direction – especially after th

Everything You Need to Know About Google Glass Funny looking? Sure. But Glass may just be a glimpse of things to come.

Google Glass means a lot of different things to many people. For some, the futuristic-looking headwear is the unavoidable next step for personal computing; a look into how technology will someday seamlessly integrate into our daily lives. And for others, Google Glass may appear like a concept without practical application, another idea like the Segway. Sure, wearing a computer on your face sounds cool, but who wants to wear it in public? No matter which side of the issue you hold as truth, there's no denying Google Glass has the chance to change the way the world thinks about communication. But what exactly is Google Glass? What do we know so far, and where might that aluminum strip and nose-bridge take us? What's Inside Google Glass? Essentially, Glass' main priority is to move the interactions we've grown accustom to with our smartphones and tablets to the hands-free convenience of a pair of glasses. An Android-powered head-mounted display res

PlayStation 4 Revealed

Goodbye, Orbis. Hello, next-gen. After weeks of speculation , Sony officially unveiled its next console from a live event in New York today: the PlayStation 4. The console will be released this holiday season . Sony's Andrew House said the new console will create "experiences that surpass gamers' wildest expectations." Lead system architect on the PlayStation 4, Mark Cerny, said "the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago" and that it's goal is "freeing developers from technological barriers." Cerny has a history in the video game industry dating back more than 30 years, first with Atari and later companies like Sega of Japan and Universal Interactive Studios. Cerny said the platform is "by game creators for game creators" and that its architecture is "like a PC, but supercharged." PS4 uses the X86 CPU and has 8GB of memory and a local hard drive. It uses APU technology and GDDR5 memo

CRYSIS 3 Review

Image
WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE → February 19, 2013 The path of the super soldier has been well-worn by gamers, especially given that the vast majority of video games are specifically designed to make you feel like a gun-toting god. It’s not like there’s an abundance of first-person accounting games, or massively multiplayer online shelf-stocking simulators (MMOSSSs). Game makers know that there’s an overwhelming majority of gamers out there who play video games for one reason and one reason alone: to forget about their lousy day at the office and step out in the oversized shoes of an almighty bad-arse for the evening. Consequently, it’s rare that we’re actually able to empathise with the protagonists in the first-person shooter genre. It’s somewhat impossible to relate to someone who murders so many so often, and shrugs off repeated gunshot wounds as though they were no more irritating than day-old sunburn. The previous games in the Crysis series have
