Sony Xperia XZ review

Image
Introduction Sony's latest flagship, the Xperia Z6 comes with refined design, improved camera, and a due update in specs. Wait, back up a little there - it's actually called the Xperia XZ this time around but, yeah, the rest of that is true. When Sony announced the new X-series, some suggested that the Xperia X Performance was meant to take on the likes of the Galaxy S7's and HTC 10's, but we knew that couldn't be the case. Okay, 'suspected' might be more accurate there. Obviously, now we all know that the Xperia XZ is Sony's top-dog for this season, and the Z in its name quickly reveals its ancestry. Indeed, the XZ has a lot in common with the Z5. The display, for one, is the same size and resolution as the last generation - not necessarily a bad thing, but the XZ also comes with 3GB of RAM - modern-day flagships will crack a condescending smile seeing that in the spec sheet. No one will laugh at the rest of it, though -

Google's Maps app gets 'OK Google' hands-free voice search

Image
Google has started rolling out a new update to its Maps app on Android that makes it even more useful by allowing you to access all the information you require without even lifting your finger. "The next time you enter navigation mode or driving mode, you can simply say 'Ok Google' followed by a voice command, without needing to tap or even look at the screen," the company says in a blog post. To use the new feature, you need to first activate hands-free voice commands, something which you can do by heading to Settings->OK Google detection and enabling the While driving setting. Aside from queries like "What’s my next turn?" and "What’s my ETA?" you can now ask the app to "Show / Hide traffic," "Mute / Unmute voice guidance," and even "Avoid tolls / highways / ferries." Not only this, you can also put up traffic-related queries like "How’s traffic ahead?" or "Show alternat

New update to Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides makes it easy to retrieve trashed files

Image
Google has pushed out a new update to the Android clients of its Docs, Sheets, and Slide apps, making it easy for users to view and retrieve deleted files. Basically, you now don't have to exit these apps to access trashed files as the update adds a new Trash option in the apps' navigation menu itself. For those who aren't aware, up until now, users had to open the Drive app to retrieve deleted files. The updated apps are now available for download from the Play Store. Source

Deal: Rogers offering free Moto InstaShare projector with pre-order of Moto Z

Image
The Moto InstaShare projector isn’t exactly the cheapest Moto Mod accessory. In the US it runs for $299, while in Canada it retails for 399 CAD. Regardless of where you get it, it’s still expensive considering it only works with the one smartphone. If you already find yourself in the market for a Moto Z from Rogers, you’ll be happy to know that if you pre-order a Moto Z from Rogers, you will be eligible to receive a free Moto InstaShare Projector. The projector Moto Mod snaps onto the back and adds 11mm to the total thickness of your Moto Z, Z Force (US Only) or Z Play, and it can display anything the phone displays by throwing up to a 70” screen onto any wall or ceiling. It’s got automatic keystone and brightness adjustment, and it focuses with a little wheel next to the LED bulb. It has an 1,100 mAh battery which offers up to one hour of projection time until the Moto Z’s internal battery kicks in. While there is some word that the Moto Z Play will also be c

Google’s quietly launches Waze Rider carpool program in San Francisco

Image
Google has its own ride-sharing program that is now going live in San Francisco. The service is called Waze Rider and only recently opened to the public after testing in the area for several months in a private Beta. Waze Rider just has a few significant differences from other ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft. For starters, the service is not for profit. The drivers earn $0.54 per mile, and because this payment is low, it allows for the service to slip under the radar of regulations that Uber and Lyft are required to follow. Also, drivers and riders are only allowed to participate in two rides per day (as per the initial Beta test), this would equate to commuting to and from work or school. The idea of the service is to let drivers fill the empty seats in their cars on their commutes to and from work, only to break even with driving costs. Thereby reducing the number of cars on the road. And for an area like San Francisco, wide use of this service could reduc

SwiftKey Beta for Android lets you type in five languages at once, adds neural network predictions for French, German, Spanish

Image
If you don't mind running beta software on your Android smartphone or tablet, SwiftKey's got a neat little update for you. The beta version of the keyboard now lets you type in a whopping five different languages at once. This is great for the polyglots amongst you, as before you could only type in a maximum of two languages at the same time. The new SwiftKey Beta also adds support for neural network predictions for three more languages: French, German, and Spanish. Previously, only English had the "world's first" predictions powered by neural networks. When that initial feature was released, the Microsoft-owned company promised to expand language support for it, and now it has. Additional languages have been added to the keyboard, namely Sindhi Pakistan, Pashto, Scottish Gaelic, and Uyghur. Key press popups can be turned on or off, and in a tablet layout there's a new setting to turn on or off the dedicated emoji key that appears to the

Samsung issues statement on some washing machines sold in the US

Image
When it rains, it pours. Samsung and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have issued a statement about top-loading washing machines manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016 and sold in the US. "In rare cases, affected units may experience abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or property damage when washing bedding, bulky or water-resistant items." You can visit www.samsung.com/us/support/tlw to check if your washing machine is affected. If it is, Samsung recommends you use the lower speed delicate cycle when washing such items that can cause vibrations. The company points out that hundreds of millions of loads have been washed without incident since 2011. You can call 1-844-483-3881 if you have any questions. Source

Samsung Galaxy A8 (2016) is finally official with a 5.7" display

Image
The Samsung Galaxy A8 (2016) has been visiting the rumor mill quite frequently these past few months. We got to see the full set of early benchmarks, including GFXBench and AnTuTu, followed by a set of pretty detailed renders. However, despite all the available information, there were still some points of confusion, like the display size. Today, Samsung finally took the wrapper off the Galaxy A8 (2016) in its home market. Design-wise, this year's model come surprisingly close to its predecessor. And frankly, considering the slim and flush metal unibody design, that is more of a bonus then anything else. The display sits is a 5.7-inch AMOLED panel of 1080p resolution. Other specs include 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The chipset is actually borrowed from last year's S6 flagship line. And just like the design language, Samsung's own Exynos 7420 is still a relevant and formidable powerhouse with its four Cortex-A53 and four Cortex-A57 cores, built on a

New rumor says Xiaomi Mi Note 2 will arrive in November

Image
Shortly after reputed Chinese analyst Pan Jiutang said that the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 will be made official towards the end of next month, a new rumor has cropped up, suggesting a November unveiling for the device. The rumor - which came in the form of a Weibo post - also revealed some of the handset's key specifications, including 5.7-inch display of 2K resolution (should be QHD though) and dual-curved screen. In case you missed, previous rumors have suggested that the phone will be available in 6GB/64GB and 8GB/256GB memory configurations. Other rumored specs include Snapdragon 821 SoC, 13MP dual-rear camera, and 8MP front shooter. Via

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ starts getting September security update as well

Image
Just a few days after the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge started receiving it, the September security update has begun rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ as well. Weighing in at 160MB, the update is currently hitting the international variant of the device. Aside from the latest security patch, the update also beings along several other changes, although a detailed change-log is currently not available. As is usually the case with OTA roll-outs, it may take some time for the update to hit your device. Meanwhile, if you feel impatient, you can manually check for the update by heading to your handset's Settings menu. Via

New 360-degree renders of Google Pixel XL leave nothing to the imagination

Image
This year’s Google phones still won’t be officially announced until Tuesday. Until then, we can only get excited about leaks, rumors, and reports about the phones before Google’s unveiling of the Pixel phones on October 4. This time, @onleaks has gotten its hands on renders or each of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL phones. Given the specific placements and complexity of where the antenna lines are, it’s more-than-likely that these are renders that were used by case-makers to design cases and accessories for the phones. Pixel XL render: There are even exact dimensions of the smartphone that come with the renders. The Google Pixel measures: 143.8 mm x 65.9 mm x 7.3 mm at the thinnest point (bottom) and 8.5 mm at the thickest point (top). Meanwhile, the Google Pixel XL will measure: 154.7 mm x 75.7 mm x 7.3 mm (top) and 8.5 mm (bottom). Both phones will feature a Snapdragon 821 CPU, 4GB of RAM, at least 32GB of internal storage (we hope it starts at 64GB), 12MP r

Moto ‘batwing’ isn’t going away, new boot animaition for all Moto devices

“Hello Moto” was Motorola’s slogan for a long time, since around or before the time of the RAZR flip phone. This iconic slogan was also a default ringtone for many who owned Motorola Handsets. Although some might not know it, Motorola’s ‘batwing’ is one of the most iconic logos when it comes to cellphones and communications. Since Lenovo’s acquisition of Motorola from Google, some consider Motorola to be gone, but Lenovo wants everyone to know the Moto brand will carry the legacy and iconography that the brand carried for many years. Hearing the “Hello Moto” slogan in the new boot animation below strikes a nostalgia cord for me, and surely many others. Moto’s USA Twitter account posted a video of the new bootup animation with the final note ending on a “Lenovo banner”. The boot animation (to me) feels like a mishmash between retro design language and popular symbols and icons. Not to mention a new voice that says “Hello Moto”. From the looks of the way Lenovo is prese

LeEco is launching in the US on October 19

Image
LeEco has been preparing its entry into the US market for quite a while now, and even acquired Vizio in the process. Back in June we heard that the Chinese company would officially make its debut in the US this fall, and now we have an actual date to speak of. LeEco is holding a special event in San Francisco on October 19, and it's started sending out press invites for it (which you can see pictured below). As for what to expect from that event, apparently LeEco will reveal a smartphone (or more) as well as a video streaming service that will compete with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and the likes. Both of these would make sense - LeEco started out as LeTV and quickly established a huge footprint for itself in the streaming market in China. And more recently, its smartphones such as the new Le Pro 3 flagship have been selling like hot cakes in its home market - to the tune of 500,000 units being gone in 15 seconds, in fact. Do note that LeEco hasn't offic

Android Wear 2.0 gets delayed until early 2017, third developer preview brings Play Store to your wrist

Image
Today Google has released the third developer preview of the upcoming Android Wear 2.0 operating system. This comes more than two months after the second preview went out. The new software meant for developers to test brings with it a huge new feature - the Google Play Store, on your wrist. From this point on, you no longer have to use your phone to put apps on your watch. The Play Store for Android Wear lets you easily find and install apps straight on your wearable. According to Google, this will help developers of Android Wear apps reach more people. The Play Store for Android wear starts up with a home view filled with recommended apps, and you can search for others using voice, keyboard, handwriting, and recommended queries. This makes finding an app as easy as possible on such a small device. You can switch between multiple Google accounts, as well as take part in alpha and beta tests, just like you can on Android itself. There's even a My Apps view in the

Over one million safe Galaxy Note7 units are already in the wild

Almost one month after its official announcement regarding the global recall of all Galaxy Note7 units sold, Samsung is today revealing that its replacement program has been going quite well. In fact, over one million safe Note7 handsets have already made it into the wild, as replacements for fire-prone handsets that people had purchased. The scope of Samsung's global voluntary recall of Note7s has been estimated at around 2.5 million units, so there's still a way to go before every single Note7 out there is of the safe kind. Still, Samsung expects to have replaced 80% of the faulty units in South Korea by Saturday. After a significant portion of (or all) fire-prone phablets have been swapped for new and safe ones, Samsung will resume sales of the Note7 across the world. So far this has happened in the US, and it's going to occur in South Korea soon, as well as in Europe from October 28. Source

Snapdragon-powered Lenovo Tab3 8 Plus spotted online

Image
Back in February Lenovo introduced a full range of new affordable tablets within the Tab3 family. Given their budget-friendly nature, however, these don't exactly "pop" in terms of specs. A newly-leaked Tab3 8 Plus is said to change that soon. Like the name suggests, it is an upgraded version of the 8-inch model, likely to hit shelves shortly. The Plus model comes with a FullHD panel and 3GB of RAM, both of which upgrades over its predecessor. The cameras have been bumped to 8MP/5MP and there are more storage options now, including a 32GB and 64GB tier, both expandable through microSD. However, the most important change appears to be the chipset. Instead of the original undisclosed quad-core MediaTek one, Lenovo has now opted for Qualcomm's Snapdragon 625. Besides having twice as many cores and being significantly faster, it is also made using a superior 14nm process. This is a rare sight on mid-range hardware and typically brings a major boo

Huawei sends out invites for November 3 event, probably for Mate 9

Image
Huawei is inviting the press to share its "latest innovations and exciting advances" on November 3 (a month from now). The press conference will be held in Munich, Germany in the afternoon and while Huawei didn't spell it out, it's totally for the Mate 9. We've been seeing a lot of leaks lately, including the pricing info and other details for the three models. They will range from $480/€430 for the base 4GB/64GB model and go up to $700/€630 for the top 6GB/256GB model. A dual camera, Android 7.0 Nougat and a large 6" screen are in order.

Samsung expects to recover 80% of Korean Note7 units by October 1

Image
A couple of days ago Samsung announced that only 60% of Galaxy Note7 buyers in Korea have returned their faulty units. Today, the company said that it expects that number to rise to 80% by October 1. Samsung is gearing up to resume sales in the country - it has restarted the advertising campaign and as an extra incentive, it promises a 50% discount on screen repairs to anyone who buys a Galaxy Note7 in October (this promo sounds like a Korea-only deal). The company once again asked buyers to return their old Note 7s to have them replaced with new units. Source

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 lauch event rumored for October

Image
Following the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus launch, Xiaomi is gearing up to unveil the Mi Note 2 and Mi Note 2 Pro in October. According to analyst Pan Jiutang, the company will introduce the two phones at the end of next month. On top of that, Jiutang says Xiaomi will also offer the phones in more than a few color choices. While there's no information on what exactly the color choices are, the Mi Note 2 and Mi Note 2 have been circling the rumor mill in the last few months. As a result, we have a good idea what we should expect. The Mi Note 2 Pro should have a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED touchscreen, a 12 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture (using either Sony's IMX260 sensor or the Samsung S5K2L1, and a large 3,700mAh battery. It will be powered by Qualcomm's recently unveiled Snapdragon 821 chipset and there will be versions with 4 and 6GB of RAM, and 64 or 128GB of UFS 2.0 flash storage built-in. As for the Xiaomi Mi Note 2, it will boast a Snapdragon 820 c

400 million machines now run Windows 10 thanks to the free-upgrade program

Image
There are now 400 million active machines running the company’s latest operating system, Windows 10. After the not-so great reception that Windows 8 and 8.1 had, not to mention its really unintuitive Metro UI, Windows 10 brought a souped up version of Windows 7 with elements of Windows 8.1 built-in. Just a few short months ago, Windows had 350 million active devices just a couple of weeks before it stopped offering free upgrades to Windows 10. All machines running Windows 7 and above were eligible for the free upgrade which lasted an entire year. This was a huge part of why so many machines are running Windows 10 today. “Active Machines” refers to all machines being actively used in the past 28 days. This includes PCs, smartphones, Xbox One, Surface Hubs and the Hololens. Since the upgrade period has ended, the adoption has slowed down to those who are purchasing new PCs or upgrades. Microsoft hopes for the OS to hit 1 billion active devices someday, quite a

The Xiaomi Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus already have over 3 million registrations

Image
Yesterday, Xiaomi stirred up quite a bit of excitement with the announcement of the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus pair. The Chinese giant appears to have taken a cue or two from Apple in terms of marketing as well, as it has opted to start sales ASAP. Both phones are said to hit shelves tomorrow. But in the meantime, to keep the hype levels high, Xiaomi has shared its preliminary registration numbers. These have surpassed the 3 million mark, which is quite impressive indeed as a rough gauge for the devices popularity. However, it is important to note that the registrations in question are not pre-orders, but rather simply people who have given their e-mail to show interest in the Mi 5s or its bigger sibling. The form has been live on Xiaomi's website for a few days now and had already ramped-up around 1.8 million entries prior to yesterday's launch. And if you missed the scoop from yesterday, the pair of devices represent a notable hardware upgrade over Xiao

Samsung Galaxy A8 is also getting September security update

Image
After unlocked Galaxy S7 and S7 edge units in Europe and T-Mobile variants of the handsets in the US, another Samsung phone has started receiving the Android security update for September. One of our readers has tipped us that the update has started hitting the Samsung Galaxy A8 (SM-A800F) as well. Weighing in at around 295MB, the update also includes improvements related to voice calls, device performance, and memory management. Some optimizations related to battery usage are also there.

New Meizu phone certified by China's 3C; Pro 6S and Pro 6 Plus rumored

Image
A new Meizu phone, carrying the model number M611A, has passed what's known as China Compulsory Certification (3C). While the certification doesn't reveal much about the device, reports say the handset runs the Yun OS, and it's screen size is in the range of 4.7 to 5 inches. Aside from this, the Chinese company is also said to be working on a couple of Pro 6 variants, dubbed Pro 6S and Pro 6 Plus. While the former is said to be powered by MediaTek's Helio P20 SoC and sport a 5.2-inch display, the Plus variant is rumored to feature Exynos 8890 chipset and a 5.7-inch screen. Both will reportedly go official by the end of next month. Via

TCL 950 goes official, brings 5.5" AMOLED, S820 and stereo speakers

Image
TCL unveiled its new flagship, the TCL 950. Recently, it has been leaking under another name - the BlackBerry DTEK60, but that one isn't official yet. TCL also unveiled 950's little brother - the 580. (in case you didn't know, TCL is more familiar in the West with its Alcatel brand) TCL 950 The specs sound all sorts of awesome - the phone is very thin (7mm), but the battery didn't suffer (3,000mAh, with Quick Charge 3.0 support). An aluminum frame supports a 2.5D glass. The TCL 950 boasts a 5.5" AMOLED screen with the respectable 500nit brightness. It has 1080p resolution, which will help battery life and performance - of which there will be plenty, thanks to the Snapdragon 820 chipset. It's paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There's a microSD slot, a hybrid slot. The camera (which is above the fingerprint reader) sources its 21MP sensor from Sony (IMX230) and has an f/2.2 aperture. The 8MP selfie camera has the same aper

Huawei Mate 9 to come in three versions, memory and pricing leaks

Image
We suspected the Huawei Mate 9 would show up at IFA, but the upcoming flagship is still to make the transition to official status. A new leak confirms that there will be three tears of Mate 9, each with different memory and color options. The top model packs 6GB of RAM and 256GB storage. It has exclusive on the Black color and will cost CNY 4,700 ($700/€630). Benchmarks have shown that the phone will have a 6" screen, Kirin 960 chipset and Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. As you can see in the image, the Huawei Mate 9 packs a dual-camera system with 12MP sensors and 4K video, plus an 8MP/1080p selfie camera. The other two models have 4GB of RAM but differ on storage - 128GB and 64GB. They cost CNY 3,700 ($550/€500) and CNY 3,200 ($480/€430) respectively. The 128GB model also comes in Brown and Pink, while the 64GB only offers the base colors - White, Gold, Graphite. There's a CNY 3,400 version of the 64GB model, which (if we're reading this right) i

LG V20 to hit the shelves this week

Image
LG has officially announced that its V20 smartphone will be available for purchase starting this week and the company's home country of South Korea will be getting it first. The announcement came in the form of a press release today. Korean media had already confirmed last week that the device will go on sale in the country on September 29, which is perfectly inline with the time-frame the company has now announced. LG has also said that other markets - including North America, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East - will get the phone "over the course of the next several weeks," lending further credence to rumors that the US launch is scheduled for October 21. It's worth mentioning that there have been reports earlier this month suggesting that the phone will not be available in Europe at launch. Presumably, that's the reason there's no information on V20's European launch in LG's new announcement.

Android 7.0 Nougat update for OnePlus 3 in works; OnePlus X Marshmallow update coming next week

OnePlus has revealed that they are "actively working" on Android 7.0 Nougat update for the OnePlus 3. The revelation was made by company executives who did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session over on Reddit. They, however, didn't share an exact timeline for the roll-out of the update. The Chinese company made another important revelation during the session - the OnePlus X will start getting Android Marshmallow update sometime next week. Finally, OnePlus also confirmed that there are currently no plans to launch a smartwatch. Source

September security update starts hitting T-Mobile Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

Image
T-Mobile has started pushing out a new update to Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge units on its network. The carrier's website says that the update - which weighs in at over 350MB - brings latest security patches, changes related to time/date, and various system improvements. However a quick look at the official change-log reveals that the update includes Samsung Cloud, sync feature for video and photos, as well as back up and restore features for apps, home screen, music files, and documents. A could management menu has also been added. As is usually the case with OTA roll-outs, it may take time for the update to hit your device. Android 7.0 confirmed for Moto Z lineup, G4, and G4 Plus

Image
It’s that time of the year, Android has already released its major update to its Nexus devices, and all the other OEMs are scrambling to get the update pushed out to their devices as soon as they can. Samsung usually takes the longest for the major updates on account of the company’s heavily modified Android skin, as well as extensive lineup of devices across hundreds of carriers all over the world. Sony’s update map has already leaked from a presentation slide, and although there is not an exact timeframe, a Motorola spokesperson told Droid Life that the Moto Z, Z Force, Z Play, as well as the Moto G4 and G4 Plus will all be updated to Android 7.0 Nougat in Q4. While this confirms the update for current-generation Motorola smartphones, the other Moto X devices are still not confirmed as Motorola knows “upgrades are about getting it right and making sure the phone performance remains the best it can be,”. Otherwise, the company will share a more detailed update s

BlackBerry DTEK60’s press photos leaked, looks exactly like an Alcatel Idol 4S

Image
The BlackBerry DTEK60 leaks are in full effect. The latest one features the phone’s official press photos. That being said, the phone looks exactly like an Alcatel IDOL 4S, down to the fingerprint sensor and camera placements, screen size and resolution, as well as the dual-direction stereo speakers. These photos coincide with @evleaks’ leak from earlier which appears in a little icon next to the DTEK60 banner that was leaked. TCL is contracted to manufacture the BlackBerry DTEK60, parent company of Alcatel; hence the family resemblance. Unlike the IDOL 4S, however, the DTEK60 will feature a Snapdragon 820 CPU (instead of a Snapdragon 652) 4GB of RAM (instead of 3GB), 21MP rear-facing camera (VS the 4S’s 16MP camera), and, of course, will feature BlackBerry’s own Android skin. And as a bonus, from the looks of these photos, the DTEK60 will feature a USB-C port, unlike the 4S which uses a micro-USB port. All the other specs remain the same. QHD 5.5 inch scr

Google Pixel XL gets the leaked press render treatment too

Image
Yesterday a purported press render of the upcoming Google Pixel smartphone got leaked. Its looks haven't been a mystery for quite a while now, thanks to various leaks and renders reconstructed based on rumored dimensions and design. Regardless of that, it was good to finally have an official-looking press render, albeit lower-resolution than usual. Now if you're a fan of bigger smartphones, you're anxiously waiting for the Pixel XL, and not the Pixel. So it would only be fair to have a leaked press render of the XL model to look at too, wouldn't it? Well, here you go. If you put this one and the Pixel image side by side you'd be hard pressed to tell which is which - but that is intentional on Google's part, we've been repeatedly told by insiders and anonymous sources. These are going to be the search giant's iPhone competitors, and it looks like they will emulate Apple's two-size, similar (if not identical) internals strategy.

New leaked renders show the Huawei Mate 9 in many colors

Image
Huawei might make the Mate 9 available on November 8, according to a rumor from last week. Before that happens, a Weibo user has apparently gotten access to a bunch of renders of the upcoming phablet, which you can see below. If these are the real deal, then it looks like Huawei is going to make the Mate 9 quite colorful. Alleged Huawei Mate 9 renders The phablet was spotted in other, more vague leaked renders last month. A purported promo image also got out a few weeks back. The Mate 9 will supposedly come with a 6-inch 1080p touchscreen, dual 20 MP cameras on the back (with Leica branding and OIS), an 8 MP selfie snapper, the company's in-house Kirin 960 chipset, 4 or 6GB of RAM, 64, 128, or 256GB of storage, and probably a very beefy battery.
