State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition Coming to Xbox One

With new content in tow.  Microsoft has announced State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition is headed to Xbox One in Spring 2015. The ambitious open world zombie survival title debuted on Xbox 360 last June and, following a very warm reception, the company has decided to bring it over to the next-gen console. The Year One Survival Edition of the title includes the original State of Decay with a resolution bumped up to 1080p, along with previously released add-ons Breakdown and Lifeline, as well as some completely new content. More information will be released closer to the game's release. Earlier this year, developer Undead Labs confirmed it'd signed a multi-year extension deal will Microsoft so this news isn't hugely surprising, but it's good to know new content is on the way. Why State of Decay: Lifelin

Moto Maker is down, getting ready for the new phones perhaps?

Image
Is Motorola trying to pull Apple’s move of shutting down the online store right before the launch of a new phone? This is pure speculation, of course, but the thing is the Moto Maker is down for “a tune up.” There’s no reason for either Apple or Motorola to disable the online store while adding a new device but it creates drama and attracts attention. Motorola will not be at IFA but will hold its own event to unveil the Moto X+1, the Moto G2, launch the Moto 360 smartwatch and a Bluetooth headset. The Moto X+1 will have wood back options and may pack some quite unusual features. Note that you can still get through to the Moto Maker but I’d recommend holding off until you see the new devices on September 4.

Nokia HERE Maps to provide free, offline navigation to Samsung Galaxy smartphones

Image
Samsung and Nokia have announced that HERE Maps are arriving in beta form on Android, free for Galaxy phones. HERE comes with voice-guided navigation capabilities and will work offline too, something which Google Maps doesn’t allow. The Tizen-running Samsung Gear smartwatches are getting HERE maps too. The initial announcement was a little vague but now we have the full details. You can download offline maps for nearly 200 countries, about half of which support turn-by-turn walk or drive instructions. In around 40 countries you also get live traffic information (which does require an Internet connection). HERE also supports public transport navigation. The Here.com site lets you pick out destinations, which will be synced with your device. You can also share destinations with your friends and family to improve the planning process. The Samsung Gear S gets the Navigator app, which can work autonomously and provide offline walk and drive navigation without

Apple sends out invites for a September 9th event

Image
Apple has just sent invitations to the press for an upcoming event on September 9. The rumors have pinpointed the date already, so it is hardly a surprise. Apple is expected to unveil the worst-kept under wraps iPhone - the 4.7" iPhone 6. If we are to trust some previous rumors, the iWatch smartwatch will be joining the next generation iPhone as well. With the recent LG G Watch R announcement and the upcoming Moto 360 smartwatch, Apple should be in a hurry to capture some of the wearable momentum. It has already snagged a former Tag Heuer's VP of sales, another proof the iWatch announcement is happening sooner than later. Apple also acquired Beats Audio this year, so we might see some interesting results from this collaboration announced at the event, too. Hopefully Apple has managed to keep some key features a secret through all of those leaks and will manage to surprise us in ways that go beyond the sapphire glass. Finally, the iOS 8 is expected to star

Google Nexus 9 blasts through AnTuTu with LTE on board

Image
A couple of days after allowing us to catch a glimpse of its specs in CPU-Z, the yet to be announced Nexus 9 tablet showed up in the AnTuTu benchmark database. The HTC-made Android 5.0 tablet posted the impressive score of 45,923 in the popular benchmark. Nexus 9 in AnTuTu (click to enlarge) The data from AnTuTu confirms the Nexus 9 specs we already know. They include 64-bit Nvidia Tegra K1 SoC with top clock speed of 2.5GHz (it explains the higher benchmark score than the non-64bit version we tested in the Xiaomi Mi Pad 7.9). The AnTuTu cameo of the Nexus 9 also reveals that the tablet will be available with LTE connectivity when official. The cellular connectivity was confirmed by the presence of an IMEI number on the device. Rumored specs of the Nexus 9 include 8.9” display with 2048x1440 pixels, 16 or 32GB of built-on memory, 8MP camera, and built-in stereo speakers. The slate will likely debut at some point in Q3 this year.

Mysterious Motorola phone passes through FCC, could be the X+1

Image
An unidentified Motorola device passed through the FCC yesterday. Not much is known about the device, except its dimensions, which measure around 140mm for the height and 72.6mm for the width. Considering the dimensions of the device and the timing of the FCC inspection, it would be fair to assume this is the soon to be announced Moto X+1, which has been heavily leaked recently. Motorola is holding an event on September 3, where it is expected to announce the successor to the Moto X, along with the pricing information for the Moto 360.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 stars in very short hands-on video

Image
The rumor mill sees Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 teaser videos and raises a short hands-on video. The video comes from Vietnam and features the phablet in a dummy box that conceals its design. To the right of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is an S Pen stylus in a black/gold color scheme. The stylus has a button, same as before. The device itself is the N910H, which should be based on Exynos 5433. Samsung's new chipset beat Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 in leaked AnTuTu benchmarks. There's going to be a Snapdragon 805 version too. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will be announced at IFA on September 3. It's expected to have a 5.7" Super AMOLED screen with QHD resolution (1,440 x 2,560 pixels, 515ppi), 16MP OIS camera and strange, unique sensors like a retinal scanner and a UV light sensor.

Kantar: Android takes a bite out of iOS in the US

Image
The latest smartphone manufacturer sales metrics provided by consumer analytics firm Kantar Worldpanel show that Android has increased its US market share by over 11 points compared to last year, for the three month period ending in July. Most of this gain comes at the expense of iOS, which has lost 11.8 points over the same period. Growth in other markets is equally impressive, with sales in countries like Mexico breaking the 80% mark - a 17.6 point increase over the 3 month period ending in July 2013. China has also seen a healthy boost in OS sales, with Android gaining 8.4 points to rest at 84.6% - all at the expense of competing mobile OSs like iOS and Windows Phone, which lost 5.6 and 1.5 points, respectively. This latest increase in Asia is attributed by Kantar to local handset manufacturers like Xiaomi and Huawei, with the former boasting a whopping 31.6% share in China. The trend is expected to continue internationally as well, as these players are expecte

HTC Desire 820 may have a quad-core 64-bit CPU

Image
HTC already unveiled one of the first Android smartphones with a 64-bit Snapdragon chipset, the Desire 510, but it's saving the higher-end phone for IFA. The HTC Desire 820 teasers initially suggested it will be the first phone with a 64-bit octa-core processor. One of the popular leaker accounts on Twitter has provided more info on the device – it will be a 5.5" phablet with a 720p screen, 13MP main camera, 8MP front-facing camera (!) and a 2,600mAh battery. The chipset is listed as MSM8916, which is the same Snapdragon 410 chipset with quad-core processor that the Desire 510 is based on. It will allegedly come paired with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The octa-core info came from a post on Chinese social network Weibo so there could be two versions of the Desire 820, HTC has put out more powerful, Asia-only versions before. Or it could be that the rumored info is wrong, we'll find out for sure next Thursday.

Destiny: What to Expect After Launch

Infamous: First Light Review

Image
Speeding Solo    As stand-alone expansions go, Infamous: First Light has a lot going for it. It’s another four hours worth of the same superhero action that powers Infamous: Second Son, and its prequel plot adds some good backstory to the neon-powered speedster, Fetch. She’s a far more interesting and likable character than Delsin Rowe. Infamous: First Light Review Commentary 11:31 The downside is that by putting us only in Fetch’s shoes, First Light limits us to just one of the four Second Son power sets. Super speed is a great power, and all the most important aspects, like endless speed, are unlocked from the get-go. The only thing is, it was a bit of a drag to spend about four hours with access to just one pow

Samsung’s Gear smartwatches to get HERE services from Nokia

Image
Nokia has teased the inclusion of its robust HERE services suite, which includes Maps and Navigation among others to make its way onto Samsung’s Gear series of wearables. Among those devices slated to get the HERE services is Samsung’s just-announced Gear S smartwatch, which will get turn-by-turn pedestrian navigation courtesy of Nokia’s service. Currently, most of Samsung’s Gear wearables run on the company’s in-house Tizen OS, which Samsung debuted with the latest generation of the smartwatches. It’s unknown whether Tizen will be able to support more robust HERE applications than the pedestrian navigation on the Gear S. The teaser, which Nokia posted on Twitter, is accompanied by the message “Tune in for more news tomorrow at 10am London time.” We’ll have to wait and see what Nokia has in store for Samsung wearables – maybe one day we’ll see an Android Wear-powered Gear with HERE maps to boot.

Microsoft updates Windows Store app policy, removes over 1500 fake apps

Image
Microsoft recently reported that a large number of its Windows Store apps are misleading users with inaccurate titles and descriptions. This has prompted the company to purge more than 1500 apps from its app catalog. The removal of the apps in question comes as part of an attempt by Microsoft to improve the quality of its app selection, and is also reflected by the company’s updated app certification requirements. The new requirements include: Naming – to clearly and accurately reflect the functionality of the app. Categories – to ensure apps are categorized according to the app function and purpose. Icons – must be differentiated to avoid being mistaken with others. The new policy also applies to submissions to the Windows Phone Store. Besides purging the 1500 apps that it has found infringing upon these new rules, Microsoft will be refunding the purchase cost to any users who downloaded the apps because of a misleading title or description. The latest move c

Microsoft Surface 3 Pro now available in 25 more countries

Image
Microsoft is expanding the availability of the Surface Pro 3 (which recently got a price cut) with 25 new countries (up from just 3!). The Docking Station is available for pre-order in those same regions. The company calls the Surface “the tablet that can replace your laptop” and has an infographic to prove the need for its hybrid device. The company surveyed 2,900 professionals in eight Asia-Pacific markets and found that half travel between different cities for their work and four out of five carry three different devices devices. The main problem with tablets and laptops is that a single device doesn’t meet all needs. Two out of five carry both a laptop and a tablet and of the other three, over 70% said they didn’t get a tablet because they couldn’t find one that will replace the laptop. Microsoft points to the deficiencies of tablets but it’s really the laptops that will take the bigger hit. The survey showed that 30% of people plan to get a hybrid device

Olympus announces PEN E-PL7 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera

Image
Olympus has announced the newest member of its PEN series of compact mirrorless interchangeable lens micro four thirds camera. The E-PL7 has some feature, many of which have been optimized for taking self portraits. The E-PL7 has a 16.05 megapixel Live MOS sensor with TruePic VII processor. The camera features in-body 3-axis image stabilization, 81 auto focus points, 8fps burst mode (up to 20 RAW and unlimited JPEG images). On the back is a 3-inch, 1.04 million dot articulating touchscreen LCD. The display can fold down and face forward to take self portraits. In fact, the camera seems almost optimized for this purpose, with several software features, such as an on-screen shutter button when the screen is facing forward that shoots a second later after you touch it so you can get into position, custom self timer with delay between 3 successive shots so you can change your pose between shots, ePortrait mode for better looking skin textures, and an improved iAuto mo

Ricoh announces Pentax K-S1 DSLR

Image
Ricoh has announced a new DSLR in their Pentax range of cameras. Called the K-S1, the new camera seems like a straightforward DSLR on paper, until you see the flashing strip of LED on the front and back. The K-S1 has a 20 megapixel APS-C sensor with an ISO rating that goes up to 51,200. The camera also has built-in shake reduction, AA filter simulator, 100% field of view pentaprism viewfinder. 5.4fps burst rate, and 1/6000 shutter speed. On the back is a 3.0-inch, 921k dot LCD. The K-S1 also features LED integrated into the grip, power switch, mode dial, and OK button, each of which indicate the current status of the camera. It wouldn’t be a Pentax if it didn’t come in a wide array of strange color combinations. Along with the traditional black, white, and blue, the K-S1 also comes in Cotton Beige, Linen Brown, Denim Blue, Tweed Gray, Sunset Orange, Dusk Gold, Moon Silver, Midnight Black, and Dawn Purple. The Pentax K-S1 will available with an 18-55mm kit lens f

BioShock for iOS arrives for $14.99

Image
BioShock for iOS has just landed and costs $14.99. The developers from 2K Games announced the arrival of the legendary title to Apple’s mobile platform earlier this month. BioShock for iOS is a full port of the original 2007 game, so the premium pricing is hardly a surprise. The newcomer will feature slightly scaled-down graphics in order to be able to work with iOS hardware, as well as fit into the 2GB file size limit imposed by Cupertino. Most importantly, the game is now available for you to download and try out. BioShock for iOS will expectedly be compatible only with newer iOS hardware. The list of devices includes iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPad Air, iPad 4, and iPad mini 2.

Kinect for Xbox One will cost $150 when it arrives in October

Image
Microsoft will launch a standalone Kinect for Xbox One in October. The device will be priced at $149.99 when available. Microsoft will offer the Kinect with a free copy of the Dance Central Spotlight game, designed specifically for the device. It will be available as a digital download. Earlier this year, Microsoft launched an Xbox One without Kinect for $399. The availability of a standalone Kinect will allow users who initially picked up a console without it to snag one up and enjoy the extra multimedia goodies it brings to the table.

Apple iWatch will reportedly debut alongside iPhone 6 on September 9

Image
According to a report from re/code , we won’t have to wait long for the debut of the Apple iWatch. The hotly anticipated wearable device is tipped for launch alongside the iPhone 6 in less than two weeks, on September 9. Unsurprisingly, the wearable device will likely be closely integrated with the built-in health-tracking suite in iOS 8. Another feature, likely to be available on the gadget is home automation via HomeKit. An Apple iWatch launch alongside iPhone 6 makes perfect sense for the Cupertino giant. Previous reports have already suggested that the device will be available in October, with price tag in the $300 range. Thankfully, September 9 is right around the corner, so we won’t have to wait long to find out all about the new product. Apple will likely begin sending media invites any moment now.

Asus teases its ZenWatch smartwatch in a video

Image
In addition to a yet another teaser of its upcoming smartwatch, Asus finally gave it a name and it’s called the ZenWatch. Frankly, we should have seen it coming, considering the company’s recent Zenfone line-up of smartphones. In any case, subtle details of the watch’s design have been revealed in the video you’re about to see. Sadly, the video doesn’t show the smartwatch with the display turned on. Because of the device’s design, it’ll be interesting to see if the screen will be an edge-to-edge affair or a square one. Now check out the video below. The Asus ZenWatch will run Android Wear and is expected to retail for about $150. We’ll probably get even more information as IFA 2014 draws near.

Updated Dropbox Pro plan ups the storage, improves security

Image
Dropbox has revamped its Pro plan with more storage, improved link sharing and remote wipe. The Dropbox Pro plan remains at $10 a month (or $100 per year) but you get 1TB of storage for that. Having a Pro account lets you share password-protected links. Sharing links is arguably one of the best features of Dropbox and now you won’t have to worry about the link getting in the wrong hands. You can get some extra peace of mind by setting up an expiration date for shared links. You can pick 7 days, 30 days or a custom period. You can also adjust the expiration date later if you change your mind. Another way to share files without giving up too much control over them is by using view-only shared folders. You can enable this for select members so that they always get the latest version of your files but will not be able to change them. Then there’s the new remote wipe feature. There are plenty of apps that will remote wipe your smartphone, but this works on laptops too

Seagate announces the first 8TB 3.5″ HDD for enterprises

Image
Following the launch of its 6TB hard drive, Seagate today announced its 8TB HDD. Unlike Western Digital, which uses helium for its high-capacity HDDs, Seagate has opted for an alternative method. Sadly, the company is mum on the method in question. Seagate has been known to use a shingled magnetic recording technology to bump the areal density of its disk platters. Seagate says its new 8TB Enterprise Capacity 3.5″ HDD increases storage capacity using fewer components, while requiring less power than before. Moreover, the drive boasts the best watts-per-gigabyte for enterprise bulk data storage, but no specifics were mentioned. The company is making the hard disk available for select customers, which are not specified. A wider release of the 8TB monster of a hard disk will happen in Q4 2014.

Kobo Aura H2O is IP67-certified for reading by the pool or at the beach

Image
Waterproof smartphones are cool but what about a waterproof ebook reader? If reading by the pool or at the beach is your thing the Kobo Aura H2O is the one to look at. It’s the first ebook reader with IP67 certification meaning it’s dust tight and can last up to half an hour under a meter of water. The screen is a 6.8″ Carta E Ink HD with 1,430 x 1080 pixel resolution and 265ppi density. For comparison, an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite has a 6″ 212ppi display. The Kobo screen has built-in illumination too and supports multitouch. Better yet it can read both MOBI and EPUB formats, with a Kindle or a Nook you get one or the other (important if you use third-party book stores). Kobo has its own eBookstore that boasts 4 million titles, including comics and kids books. You can download books via Wi-Fi and the 4GB of built-in memory can store about 3,000 at a time. If you ever need more (unlikely, but still) you can plug in a microSD card. There are Kobo apps for desktops,

‘Swing Copters’ update makes the game playable

Image
Last week when I reviewed Swing Copters, I complained about the inane difficulty level that not just made the game challenging but simply unplayable. It seems I wasn’t the only one though, as a lot of people uninstalled the game minutes after installing it due to the difficulty level. That seems to have been a good enough wake up call for the developer, who has released an update that makes the game easier and actually playable. For starters, you now have a few seconds to try the controls and get used to the game’s dynamics before you are thrown into the hammers. The hammers themselves have been slowed down and are practically not even a threat any more. The gap between the metal bars also seems to have been increased. Lastly, the flight mechanism of the propeller hat has also been altered and it is easier to control now. If you try the game after the update it’s quite easy to reach double digit figures now. The game is still difficult but to an enjoyable

Chrome 37 brings DirectWrite support on Windows

Image
Google has released v37.0.2062.94 of the desktop version of Chrome for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and it brings with it a highly requested feature on Windows: DirectWrite support. DirectWrite is a set of API from Microsoft for rendering text and glyphs on screen. It allows higher quality rendering of fonts that look noticeably better than the standard GDI or Graphics Device Interface method of rendering. This is something Firefox and Internet Explorer have had for years on Windows but Chrome is just getting now. DirectWrite uses Microsoft’s ClearType rendering method, which employs sub-pixel rendering of fonts. In sub-pixel rendering, the software can not just use individual pixels to render the text but also individual sub-pixels (RGB) within the pixels for even finer control over the shape of the fonts. This allows more precise spacing and higher quality anti-aliasing of fonts at all sizes. The resultant text looks more even and smoother to the eye. DirectWrite tex

Instagram adds time-lapse video recording to its repertoire

Image
Instagram added time-lapse video recording to its repertoire of tricks. Dubbed Hyperlapse, the functionality is available only for iOS devices for the time being. Like all things Instagram, Hyperlapse features clean, easy to ready interface. Users can begin and end video capture via a tap of the device’s screen. A playback speed between 1x and 12x is available for the user to choose before saving the video to the camera roll. The functionality also offers built-in stabilization for capturing videos while moving. In short, you don’t need to try hard to shoot quality time-lapse videos. If you have an iOS device and have tried the new Instagram feature, feel free to drop us a line with your impressions in the comments section.
