News Samsung Galaxy S4 to support the Gear smartwatch

Samsung's executive vice president for marketing at the company's mobile division Lee Young-hee has revealed that the Galaxy S4 will get support for the Galaxy Gear smartwatch by the end of October.

Additionally, the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III smartphone are also going to support the company's smartwatch. This will happen by the end of December, according to Lee Young-hee.
The compatibility between the products will come as part of the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update that the trio of smartphones is bound to get. The update brings the crucial Bluetooth 4.0 LE support that the Galaxy Gear requires.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will start selling in South Korea in October. The unsubsidized price of the Galaxy Gear is €350.

Samsung releases Gear 2 and Gear Fit SDK

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo went official just three days ago, running on a Tizen-based OS. This time around though Samsung has confirmed both smartwatches will support third-party apps. The lack of third-party apps was a major drawback on the first Gear watch and we are happy to see Samsung is changing its strategy. So, just as promised at the announcement, the SDK for the Gear 2 duo is now live. Even better, the SDK also supports the Tizen-based Galaxy Fit band, so it will also welcome third-party apps once it hits the shelves. Finally, Samsung is launching another SDK for the S-Health services. Both SDK kits are now available for download on Samsung’s Developer Portal.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android drops Office 365 subscription requirement

Yesterday, Microsoft finally announced the Office suite of apps for the iPad, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But along with the new announcement, Microsoft also made a quiet change to its existing Android app. Just like its iOS counterparts, the Android version of the Office Mobile app required an Office 365 subscription to actually be used to create and edit documents. Surprisingly, Microsoft has dropped that requirement now, which means you can access the app fully without having to spend a dime. The app still only lets you create Word and Excel files, with no way to create or edit PowerPoints and all your files will be saved on your OneDrive instead of locally. Also, there isn’t really a version optimized for Android tablets yet. Still, it’s a free app so you can’t complain much about it.
