30% of all Windows Phones are Lumia 520 or 521

It's amazing what you can accomplish when you sell a handset with decent specs at an attractive price. As a result of Nokia's aggressive pricing with the Lumia 520 and 521, these little smartphones that could now account for 30% of all Windows Phone handsets sold worldwide.
The news was reveled on AdDuplex's Alex Mendelvich's Twitter account. In the US, the 520 has even outdone sales of the Lumia 920, which previously held the number 2 spot.
If the numbers for the Lumia 520 and 521 are anything to go by, then the Lumia 525 should be a real hit as well. It is nearly identical to the aforementioned two models but for one important difference: it has double the RAM (1GB). This will allow 525 users to enjoy virtually all apps on the Windows Phone marketplace, giving them even more bang for their buck. Let's see if Nokia can win the bargain smartphone race, where it certainly does well now.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android drops Office 365 subscription requirement

Yesterday, Microsoft finally announced the Office suite of apps for the iPad, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But along with the new announcement, Microsoft also made a quiet change to its existing Android app. Just like its iOS counterparts, the Android version of the Office Mobile app required an Office 365 subscription to actually be used to create and edit documents. Surprisingly, Microsoft has dropped that requirement now, which means you can access the app fully without having to spend a dime. The app still only lets you create Word and Excel files, with no way to create or edit PowerPoints and all your files will be saved on your OneDrive instead of locally. Also, there isn’t really a version optimized for Android tablets yet. Still, it’s a free app so you can’t complain much about it.

Samsung releases Gear 2 and Gear Fit SDK

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo went official just three days ago, running on a Tizen-based OS. This time around though Samsung has confirmed both smartwatches will support third-party apps. The lack of third-party apps was a major drawback on the first Gear watch and we are happy to see Samsung is changing its strategy. So, just as promised at the announcement, the SDK for the Gear 2 duo is now live. Even better, the SDK also supports the Tizen-based Galaxy Fit band, so it will also welcome third-party apps once it hits the shelves. Finally, Samsung is launching another SDK for the S-Health services. Both SDK kits are now available for download on Samsung’s Developer Portal.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7 spotted in the wild

Huawei is still only giving us teasing glances at the new Ascend Mate 7 but we have leaked photos of the upcoming phablet to gawk at. The latest batch featrues "in the wild" photos rather than the photos taken by TENAA during the certification process. Huawei Ascend Mate 7 photos The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is the third generation and while the first two were mid-rangers, this one sits higher up with a 6" 1080p screen, a 13MP / 1080p camera and a Kirin 920 chipset (octa-core CPU, Mali-T625MP4 GPU). It has a fingerprint scanner on its metal back, a la HTC One Max. The Ascend Mate 7 will be unveiled at IFA, Huawei's event is scheduled for Thursday, September 4.
