Android Nougat now offers the option to migrate from iOS, kind of?


A Reddit user performed a factory reset on his Nexus 6P only to discover that a new option is now available for the first time on a device running stock Android. Granted, this isn’t a feature exactly new on Android. OEMs like HTC and Samsung have offered the option to switch from iOS before.
The real news here is that an iOS migration option appears in the setup of a Nexus 6P on Nougat. The option links you to a website with instruction on how to migrate your stuff over from iOS.
So, the migration tool isn’t really a tool. From what it appears on the website, you won’t be able to transfer text messages or email accounts from your iOS device over Wi-Fi or OTG cable like on Samsung's Smart Switch migrator.
For emails, the directions just say to “install the app for your email service from Google Play”. For iCloud mail, it says to “install an email app that supports IMAP, POP3, and exchange accounts.” Then there’s a friendly reminder to disable iMessage before switching your SIM card.
All these instructions tell you to do is download some app and use it to move your stuff onto Google’s services. To transfer music, the instructions tell you to download the Google Music manger on your computer and upload everything from iTunes. Likewise, the way to transfer photos is by downloading the Google Photos app for iOS and uploading your entire image collection.
So in reality, there is no migration tool. It’s just a website that reminds people that they can use Google’s tools to back their stuff up. Maybe the option is a placeholder for a migration app to be released by Google in the future?
Should Google have even put this option on Nougat? Would it have been better if Google left the option out altogether?

Future Nokias may have Carl Zeiss optics, but HMD is playing coy

Long before Huawei partnered with a legendary German camera brand, Nokia put Carl Zeiss-branded lenses on its phones. A recent Tweet led people to believe that partnership will not carry over to the HMD-made phones, but now there’s a glimmer of hope. It turns out that was a mistake - the tweet only meant that the current Nokias (6, 5 and 3) do not have Zeiss optics, not that new phones definitely will not have them. Of course, that’s not the same as confirming that they will, even though the tweet ends with a tantalizing “stay tuned”. New rumor suggests OnePlus 3T will be cheaper in China

When the OnePlus 3T was announced last week, its US and European pricing information was revealed - the device will carry $439 and $479 price tag for the 64GB and 128GB variants, respectively, in the US, while in the EU the prices will be €439 and €479, respectively. Now, a new rumor has revealed the expected price tag the handset will carry in China. According to the rumor, the 64GB variant of the phone is expected to cost RMB 2,799 (around $405), while the 128GB model will set you back RMB 3,299 (around $480). The report adds that there's a possibility that the company might bring down the price of the 128GB variant to RMB 3,199 (around $465). MIUI 8 to arrive alongside Mi Max on May 10, Xiaomi confirms

We already know that the Xiaomi Mi Max - which is said to sport a mammoth 6.4-inch FullHD display - will be unveiled on May 10. However, turns out that Xiaomi will make a couple of more announcements that day - the company has confirmed that the next major iteration of its MIUI ROM as well as the Mi Band 2 will also be unveiled on May 10. "Evolving from the first version in 2010, MIUI has served as the operating system for over 150 million across the globe," a post on MIUI forum said. "On May 10, we will introduce you MIUI 8, with the features you always wanted and new designs beyond your imagination." Flipkart teases upcoming Moto E, will go on sale on May 14

We practically know everything about the Motorola Moto E now. The company's newest Android smartphone is expected to slow below the already low-priced Moto G. Indian online retailer Flipkart, which has exclusive rights to sell the Moto G and Moto X in India, has now started teasing the Moto E on their social media accounts. The teaser images don't mention the name but the outline of the phone matches all the leaked images we have seen. Flipkart is also suggesting replacing low-end feature phones with the Moto E, indicating a very low price point. The website says '4 days to go for the new Moto', meaning the phone will go on sale on May 14, even if the actual launch is on May 13. Report: Galaxy S8's facial recognition tech will be used for mobile payments

Last week, there were reports that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 will feature facial recognition technology, which will be used to unlock the phone. Now, a new report is suggesting that the tech will be used for mobile payments as well.
