Apple Launching Completely Redesigned Mac Pro in December

Apple's new powerhouse desktop computer will start at $2,999.

Apple's completely redesigned Mac Pro finally has a release window and price. The powerhouse desktop computer, with its compact cylindrical case, will be available starting in December through the Apple Online Store, Apple retail stores, and authorized resellers. And considering Mac Pro users have waited for a proper refresh since 2010, there's lots to talk about.

Apple will sell ready-made Mac Pros in two different varieties. A configuration with a 3.7 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, dual 2GB AMD FirePro D300 GPUs, 12GB of memory, and 256GB flash storage starts at $2,999. Upgrading to a 3.5 GHz 6-core Xeon E5, dual 3GB AMD FirePro D500 GPUs, and 16GB of memory will increase the price to $3,999.
Of course, you can still configure your Mac Pro with other, even more robust internals. Apple claims that the new Mac Pro is up to twice as fast as the current model, and with the option to upgrade to 12-core Intel Xeon E5 processors, there's plenty of speed available. Dual 6GB AMD FirePro D700 GPUs, up to 64GB of memory, and a terabyte of flash storage were all mentioned by Apple during today's announcement.
The Mac Pro also includes six Thunderbolt 2 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, USB 3.0 ports, a pair of Gigabit Ethernet ports, and 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity. OS X Mavericks will come pre-installed, and the system is said to use 70 percent less power than the current Mac Pro.
