WP GDR3 goes official with 1080p, Snapdragon 800 support

Microsoft has finally announced the much anticipated GDR3 update for its Windows Phone smartphone 8 platform. Its rollout will begin over the coming weeks but will take "several months" to complete. We're yet to find out specifics about device update eligibility but we're guessing Nokia's higher-end Lumia range and HTC's 8X and 8S seem certain.
We saw quite a few leaks prior to the official announcement and it seems sources were mostly correct.
GDR3 brings support for larger displays (5 and 6-inch) with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The quad-core Snapdragon 800 is also now given the green light for debuting on Windows Phone.


Now every horizontal line on the start screen supports 6 Live Tiles and not four. You can finally close apps in the task switcher interface by hitting the little X on each app's thumb.
There's a also new Driving Mode, which gets everything out of the way except your navigation instructions.
Custom ringtones are now available for instant messages, emails, voicemails and reminders. There's a screen orientation lock feature (finally), improved accessibility for disabled users - screen reader, calendar, calls, texts, emails and low battery can be spoken out loud.

Verizon's Galaxy S5 camera plagued by bugs

Verizon's early adopters of Samsung's latest Galaxy S5 flagship are having some trouble with their devices. Many are reporting their camera refuses to work after a few days. The error message just says "Warning: Camera failed". There is no fix to be found. The users tried everything Verizon has suggested them to do - software and hardware factory resets, wiping caches from recovery, etc. Nothing works so far. The unlucky owners are having their devices replaced, but there is no guarantee this won't happen again. There is even a Galaxy Note 3 on Verizon affected by the same problem already. Hopefully this issue is resolved quickly by a firmware update. Meanwhile we advise Verizon's Galaxy S5 users to stay away from third-party camera apps such as Instagram, Shapchat, Facebook, etc. because some users are reporting the problem started after installing and using such an app.

OnePlus One tops Galaxy S5, One (M8) in AnTuTu 4

OnePlus continues to tease its first phone called the One. The maker has revealed it will use the Snapdragon MSM8974AC chipset – the one with Krait 400 @ 2.5GHz – and 3GB RAM for its debut handset. OnePlus released a screenshot of an AnTuTu 4 score, which tops all current flagships. This is the cumulative score, it doesn’t show the separate CPU and 3D scores that the device achieved, but they should be on par or better than any other Android on the market right now (or in the near future). Microsoft Files Patent for Head-Mounted Display Device

These AR glasses are somewhat reminiscent of Google Glass. Microsoft may have plans to release a head-mounted display device in the future, if a newly filed patent is any indication. The device comes in the form of glasses and may be equipped with things like a microphone, an eye-tracking system, a depth camera, and a camera capable of recognizing the faces of other players. The patent describes it as being intended for multiplayer gaming applications, such as being able to use a voice commands or eye-tracking data to send a game invitation to another player, who could then use his or her glasses to respond. Limiting a device like this to sending game invites might seem like a very narrow use of such a thing. Labor Violations Report at Apple Supplier Confirms Low-Cost iPhone
