Huawei Ascend P7 with sapphire display confirmed by top exec

Huawei's Device Chairman Yu Chengdong first brought to light the possibility of a Huawei Ascend P7 in an interview at the beginning of the month, during which he even pulled out a sapphire display-toting P7. Now, Chengdong has posted a picture of the device on his Weibo account, suggesting that the company may introduce it at the next month's IFA show.

An announcement of a smartphone with a sapphire display could mean that Apple is not the only manufacturer readying the special display tech for its upcoming flagship. Whether or not Huawei will beat the Cupertino company to the punch remains to be seen, as actual device shipments are another story.
The Ascend P7 sports a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A9 processor on the company's in-house HiSilicon Kirin chipset. There's also 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a 13MP/8MP camera combo. It's likely that the updated Ascend P7 variant will contain the same internals, but we'll know for sure after the official device launch.
