Ascend P7 Sapphire Edition now official, hitting China soon

Yesterday, a Huawei executive confirmed the existence of the Ascend P7 sporting a sapphire display. He even showcased it during an interview.
Today, the company's PR team was quick to follow on that action and make the smartphone official. Well, sort of - they reached out to us and confirmed that the phone will be called Ascend P7 Sapphire Edition, and that it is coming to China soon. The explicit mention of China and exclusion of other countries suggests that the phone will probably only have a limited release in the company's homeland.

The company also said the P7 Sapphire Edition will have 4G LTE connectivity. We assume that it's going to work on China Telecom's network as well, although that's not confirmed yet.
We expect more information to be released in the coming days, including pricing. Judging from Huawei's words, the company is gearing to release the phone before Apple reveals the iPhone 6 with a sapphire display.

Samsung releases Gear 2 and Gear Fit SDK

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo went official just three days ago, running on a Tizen-based OS. This time around though Samsung has confirmed both smartwatches will support third-party apps. The lack of third-party apps was a major drawback on the first Gear watch and we are happy to see Samsung is changing its strategy. So, just as promised at the announcement, the SDK for the Gear 2 duo is now live. Even better, the SDK also supports the Tizen-based Galaxy Fit band, so it will also welcome third-party apps once it hits the shelves. Finally, Samsung is launching another SDK for the S-Health services. Both SDK kits are now available for download on Samsung’s Developer Portal.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android drops Office 365 subscription requirement

Yesterday, Microsoft finally announced the Office suite of apps for the iPad, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But along with the new announcement, Microsoft also made a quiet change to its existing Android app. Just like its iOS counterparts, the Android version of the Office Mobile app required an Office 365 subscription to actually be used to create and edit documents. Surprisingly, Microsoft has dropped that requirement now, which means you can access the app fully without having to spend a dime. The app still only lets you create Word and Excel files, with no way to create or edit PowerPoints and all your files will be saved on your OneDrive instead of locally. Also, there isn’t really a version optimized for Android tablets yet. Still, it’s a free app so you can’t complain much about it.
