AnTuTu hints of a pending Snapdragon 805-powered Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 tablet

Amazon may be working on a revamped flagship tablet, the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9. The original one launched with the then-current Snapdragon 800, while this new version spotted by the AnTuTu team uses the latest Snapdragon 805.
Other key specs seem unchanged – like the 8.9″ 2,560 x 1,600 screen, 2GB of RAM or 8MP / 1MP camera setup.
It’s important to note that the software has been updated and the heavily-customized Amazon Fire OS that powered the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 was based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The previous generation Kindle Firesand even the new Amazon Fire Phone (with Fire OS 3.5) ran software based on 4.2 Jelly Bean.
The new Snapdragon 805 chipset is pretty sweet all by itself – it includes a brand new CPU core design (Krait 450) and a new generation GPU (Adreno 420). It also supports blazing fast LTE (Cat. 6, up to 225Mbps), not that the US, Amazon’s prime market, has any networks to support it.
The benchmark may have missed other interesting things like the unique camera setup on the Fire Phone. It’s not a wild guess that this tech may be coming to the Amazon tablets as well.

Samsung releases Gear 2 and Gear Fit SDK

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo went official just three days ago, running on a Tizen-based OS. This time around though Samsung has confirmed both smartwatches will support third-party apps. The lack of third-party apps was a major drawback on the first Gear watch and we are happy to see Samsung is changing its strategy. So, just as promised at the announcement, the SDK for the Gear 2 duo is now live. Even better, the SDK also supports the Tizen-based Galaxy Fit band, so it will also welcome third-party apps once it hits the shelves. Finally, Samsung is launching another SDK for the S-Health services. Both SDK kits are now available for download on Samsung’s Developer Portal.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android drops Office 365 subscription requirement

Yesterday, Microsoft finally announced the Office suite of apps for the iPad, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But along with the new announcement, Microsoft also made a quiet change to its existing Android app. Just like its iOS counterparts, the Android version of the Office Mobile app required an Office 365 subscription to actually be used to create and edit documents. Surprisingly, Microsoft has dropped that requirement now, which means you can access the app fully without having to spend a dime. The app still only lets you create Word and Excel files, with no way to create or edit PowerPoints and all your files will be saved on your OneDrive instead of locally. Also, there isn’t really a version optimized for Android tablets yet. Still, it’s a free app so you can’t complain much about it.
