EA: We Aren't Favouring Microsoft Over Sony

"Microsoft, particularly in Europe, feels it needs to catch up a little bit with the PlayStation brand." EA's COO has reiterated that the company isn't favouring Microsoft over Sony, despite a host of decisions that would seem to suggest otherwise. In an interview with Games Industry , Peter Moore asserted that despite exclusive games like Titanfall and the fact EA is offering free copies of FIFA 14 with every pre-ordered Xbox One in Europe , the publisher is remaining neutral in the battle for next-generation dominance. "We have relationships with both companies that go back many many years, so I think that what you saw yesterday was, just from a phasing perspective, you saw a little bit more of the Microsoft stuff," he explained. "We have a lot of partnership opportunities with Sony, with the PlayStation 4, which w...

Watch Dogs: Embracing Fear

Steal, invade and observe. I wouldn’t consider myself a paranoid person. I fear a few things, much like anyone else. I’m not a huge fan of heights. Snakes, alligators and spiders freak me out. And I’m still not really sure why clowns need to exist. But most of those things are situational, and easily solved or avoided. There is, however, one thing that sits in the back of my head, making me look over my back and wonder if and when it might happen. Broadly speaking, that fear pertains to electronic surveillance and theft. It’s not that I wear a tinfoil hat and mutter to myself constantly, but I’m certainly aware of the risks and danger. I’ve had my credit card information stolen. I’ve had people jump into my home network. I think we’re all aware that the United States government has been watching digital activity to various degrees. A digital inv...

Valve Celebrates One Year of Steam Greenlight

“Ultimately our goal is to have no bottlenecks at all between developers and consumers.” Steam Greenlight is one year old today. In a statement this morning, Valve said Greenlight has doubled the number of independent titles available on Steam since its launch, and new titles continue to be submitted every day. "Ultimately our goal is to have no bottlenecks at all between developers and consumers," said Valve co-founder Gabe Newell . "As we move closer to that, launching Greenlight and evolving our backend toolset has helped us increase our publishing throughput, pushing the number of independent titles released in the last twelve months to equal the number of titles published from all other categories combined. We expect that number to grow dramatically as we continue to iterate upon our developer service features and seek more ways to improve Steam's value to the community." ...

Alleged Photo of Nokia's 6-inch Lumia 1520 Leaked

Image
Windows Phone "phablet" could launch by November. An alleged photo of Nokia's rumored 6-inch smartphone has surfaced, courtesy of WPCentral . The purported device, which is expected to be called the Lumia 1520, is equipped with a 20-megapixel PureView camera and a quad-core Snapdragon processor. The phone is said to also include the yet-to-be-released Windows Phone 8 GDR3 operating system to support the device's 1080p display and a third column of Live Tiles. Photo credit: WPCentral For comparison, the image shows the unannounced phone next to what appears to be the 4.5-inch Lumia 1020 . Nokia will reportedly host an event next month to properly unveil the Lumia 1520 alongside a  10.1-inch tablet running Windows RT . The 6-inch smartphone is expected to be sold in the United States through AT&T by November, pitting it directly against the device's biggest competition in the "phablet" market, Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 3 ....

Nintendo President on PS4, Xbox One Launch Lineups: 'Meh'

Image
With the encroaching next gen systems on the way, Nintendo’s president shares his thoughts. During an interview with IGN, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime defended Wii U's value proposition for consumers this Fall. As we reported earlier, Nintendo will cut the price of Wii U by $50 in the US starting September 20. So we asked Reggie what are the incentives for consumers to choose Nintendo, especially since their home console is $100 cheaper than its closest competitor. “It’s all about the games. The competitive systems have announced their launch lineups. I’m allowed to say ‘Meh,’” Fils-Aime said. “I look at our lineup of titles and I feel good about our lineup. We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong. In addition to great titles like Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101, I feel very good about our lineup, and I feel very good about the value proposition we’re putting out there for the consumer.” The Wii U will be sold for $299.99 starting...

Gamescom: Prepare to Lose Your Life to PS4’s Resogun

Image
The “spiritual successor” to Super Stardust is on the cylindrical horizon. Super Stardust HD isn’t only very easily one of PlayStation Network’s best games ; its sequel on PS Vita, Super Stardust Delta, is perhaps even better . That’s why when Finnish developer Housemarque revealed its PS4-exclusive title Resogun – a “spiritual successor” to Stardust – PlayStation gamers began to wonder how similar it would be to the games that endeared them to Housemarque in the first place. Well, wonder no more. Resogun is very much like Super Stardust, right down to its twin-stick mechanics and twitch gameplay. But it’s its own game, too, one that stands out as being different enough not to be a Stardust game in its own right. Either way, after playing it a few times, it quickly became clear that this game has the potential to suck scores of hours from your life, just like the Housemarque arcade shooters that came before it. So pretty. So dangerous. In Super Stardust HD and De...

Gamescom: In Helldivers, You Probably Won’t Survive

Image
The hardest of the hardcore. As impressed as I was with PlayStation-exclusive titles at this year’s Gamescom like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Resogun, Infamous: Second Son, and Metrico, Arrowhead Studios’ Helldivers is a game that stood out to me simply because I didn’t see anything like it coming. It’s not a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination. It doesn’t try to tell much of a story, either. What it does do is create a feeling of dread and hopelessness, and yet it makes you want to come back for more. Of course, “dread and hopelessness” should be put into context, because Helldivers isn’t a scary game, it’s just really, really difficult. It beats you mercilessly; it makes you feel like you can’t complete a single mission. And I had a lot of fun playing it. Good luck. You're really, really going to need it. Helldivers is a co-op action game that can accommodate up to four players. It will launch on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita s...

The Fun of Running For Your Life in Dying Light

Image
When the sun goes down get ready to flee. The Gamescom Dying Light hands-on demo is a taste of exactly why you should be scared of the dark. This game's day/night cycle is much more than just window dressing: it's core to the gameplay, with a radical shift in how you approach the world once the sun goes down. The demo kicks off in more introductory territory, of course. The mission you're given seems simple enough: get out and help fortify your camp ahead of nightfall by setting a variety of traps for the infected in the area. Waypoints highlight the next trap location on the mini-map, but since Dying Light is open world, you can get there any way you like. The streets are thick with the infected, so the smartest option is to avoid them, either by using the environment to circumvent them, or through distractions. Or both. If you ...

Image
LG's completely stock Android smartphone gets a $100 price drop. Google has dropped the price of its already affordable Nexus 4 smartphone, as reported by  Android Central . The completely stock Android device originally launched last year for $299 and $349 unlocked, and now can be picked up for just $199 for the 8GB version and $249 for the 16GB model . The LG-manufactured Nexus 4 is equipped with a 1280 x 768 4.7-inch display, a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel camera. Google has stated that the Nexus 4 can be picked up for at least 25 percent off in Australia, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, Korea, the United States, and the UK. If you bought the device in the last 15 days, Google has offered to refund the difference through its Price Protection program ...

Nintendo Announces 2DS

Image
Entry-level handheld plays all DS and 3DS games and features slate design, but no 3D. Nintendo announced the 2DS today, a new entry-level handheld system. The 2DS will be available for $129.99 on October 12th (the same day as Pokemon X and Y) and features a slate-like design rather than the clamshell seen on DS and 3DS models. The 2DS is fully compatible with all 3DS and DS games but does not include the ability to display games in 3D. It still features all the functionality of 3DS (WiFi, local multiplayer, etc.) and can be put to sleep using a slider that replicates closing the clamshell on a standard 3DS. WiFi can still be turned off, though it’s done via controls in the software rather than with a physical switch. “Imagine a standard 3DS laid all the way flat, and with the depth slider all the way down,” Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime explained to IGN. “Everything else is there in the system.” The 2DS will launch in red and blue models to start a...

Lost Planet 3 Review

Image
All is not lost. There are flashes of greatness in Lost Planet 3 . Its story has some surprisingly excellent acting, its icy world is struck by impressively intense storm effects, and a couple of times the stars align and its third-person shooting and rock’em sock’em giant-robot-versus-monsters combat modes work together to produce a novel boss fight. But flashes are all they are, and the often frustrating metaphorical dimness between them makes up the bulk of its 15-hour single-player campaign gets in the way of admiring them. This is a typical “going native” plot, in the same vein as movies like Pocahontas and Avatar, but Lost Planet 3’s prequel tale (set around 50 years before the original) is its best feature. It’...

Flashback Review

Image
ONE FLASH FORWARD, TWO FLASHES BACK An intriguing sci-fi setting with an amnesiac hero. Distinctively rotoscoped visuals. Innovative gameplay mechanics and a difficulty level that rewarded patience and pinpoint accuracy. These are just a few of the reasons why Delphine Software’s original 1992 Flashback was lauded by many as one of the great action games of the 16-bit generation. Unfortunately this HD remake doesn’t come close to earning such accolades. Helmed by original director Paul Cuisset, the plot, settings and characters in Flashback remain mostly unchanged, but those other descriptors no longer apply. The hand-traced art has been ditched in favour of a more generic 2.5D, Unreal Engine-powered aesthetic, the gameplay is straightforward and lacking in surprises, and any sense of challenge has been neutered thanks to th...
