Sony Online Entertainment to Offer One Subscription For All Titles
Pay $14.99 and get access to Planetside 2, DC Universe Online, EverQuest Next and more...
Update: Sony has announced that it will offer its PC MMO players a single subscription model covering multiple titles from April.Called All Access, the programme will offer a range of benefits and discounts for $14.99 a month, though this amount can be reduced if you tie yourself into a longer plan. These include 500 Station Cash each month from within game marketplaces, a 10% discount on marketplace purchases and exclusive promotions.
Free-to-play members will still be able to play games without paying for them and the new consolidated payment options are only available on PC right now.
We first heard about the plan and the thoughts behind it at the start of this month, which you can check out in the original story below.
Original Story: Sony Online Entertainment is thinking about introducing a new subscription model, which would allow gamers to pay a single subscription for access to all titles.
Taking to Reddit, SOE chief John Smedley said the developer of titles including Planetside 2, DC Universe Online and the upcoming EverQuest Next was considering revamping the way it offers subscriptions to players in a bid to make them more valuable. Of course if you'd still prefer to play the game for free but not have access to the perks of a sub, you'll still be able to do so.
We've got a great lineup of games, some of which aren't announced yet.
"The goal would be to let you pick an item in each game you play.
Some of you might say "well who cares..I only play Planetside 2. How is
that a benefit to me?" My answer is simple - we've got a great lineup of
games, some of which aren't announced yet that cater to a lot of
players."We have EQN and EQNL coming along with other..... games... that PS2 players might just like."
Quite what he means by that tease in the last line is unclear but, elsewhere in the post, he expounded upon why this sub model currently isn't being considered for the PS3 and PS4.
If the plan does come to pass (and it seems like this is likely), North American gamers will be the first to get access to the scheme. Smedley explained that there'll need to be discussions with European partners first, but he's confident it can all be worked out.
