15% of Windows Phone carry the GDR3 update

Microsoft is big on uniformity with their Windows Phone brand: you’re not going to see any skinned versions of their quickly rising mobile platform anytime soon. As a result, manufacturers also face some hardware restrictions. Maximum screen resolution and maximum processor speed caps are part of the territory.

The GDR3 update rollout isn’t going particularly quickly though and several months after its release only 15% of the Windows Phones surveyed in Q4 2013, are carrying it.
Of course, we got several updates from Nokia in January and will all newly sold WP handsets packing GDR out of box, chances are that adoption will grow quickly. However, Microsoft will certainly need to step up its game in the future and show the positive side of uniformity – quick updates. Otherwise the strong limitations of the platform only serve to limited choice for end users.
Mendelvich also reported on the top 12 selling Windows Phones: and all of them are Nokia handsets, unsurprisingly.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android drops Office 365 subscription requirement

Yesterday, Microsoft finally announced the Office suite of apps for the iPad, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But along with the new announcement, Microsoft also made a quiet change to its existing Android app. Just like its iOS counterparts, the Android version of the Office Mobile app required an Office 365 subscription to actually be used to create and edit documents. Surprisingly, Microsoft has dropped that requirement now, which means you can access the app fully without having to spend a dime. The app still only lets you create Word and Excel files, with no way to create or edit PowerPoints and all your files will be saved on your OneDrive instead of locally. Also, there isn’t really a version optimized for Android tablets yet. Still, it’s a free app so you can’t complain much about it.

Samsung releases Gear 2 and Gear Fit SDK

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo went official just three days ago, running on a Tizen-based OS. This time around though Samsung has confirmed both smartwatches will support third-party apps. The lack of third-party apps was a major drawback on the first Gear watch and we are happy to see Samsung is changing its strategy. So, just as promised at the announcement, the SDK for the Gear 2 duo is now live. Even better, the SDK also supports the Tizen-based Galaxy Fit band, so it will also welcome third-party apps once it hits the shelves. Finally, Samsung is launching another SDK for the S-Health services. Both SDK kits are now available for download on Samsung’s Developer Portal.

Huawei Ascend Mate 7 spotted in the wild

Huawei is still only giving us teasing glances at the new Ascend Mate 7 but we have leaked photos of the upcoming phablet to gawk at. The latest batch featrues "in the wild" photos rather than the photos taken by TENAA during the certification process. Huawei Ascend Mate 7 photos The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is the third generation and while the first two were mid-rangers, this one sits higher up with a 6" 1080p screen, a 13MP / 1080p camera and a Kirin 920 chipset (octa-core CPU, Mali-T625MP4 GPU). It has a fingerprint scanner on its metal back, a la HTC One Max. The Ascend Mate 7 will be unveiled at IFA, Huawei's event is scheduled for Thursday, September 4.
