3.9 Million Xbox One Consoles Shipped in 2013
3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles were also shipped during the final quarter of 2013.
During the final quarter of 2013, 3.9 million Xbox One consoles and 3.5 million Xbox 360 consoles were sold in to retailers, Microsoft announced today as part of its quarterly earnings release.Earlier this month, the company announced that sales of its next-gen console had already surpassed 3 million units before the end of last year. Note that, unlike that figure, these latest Xbox One and Xbox 360 numbers reflect the number of consoles sold to retailers, a number which is always greater than the number actually sold through to consumers.
Microsoft also today announced its revenue for the quarter ending December 31, 2013 reached $24.52 billion, a new record. (During the same period the year prior, revenue was $21.46 billion.) The devices and consumer business was especially strong, with revenue growing 13% to $11.91 billion, representing nearly half of the company's total revenue.
"Our Commercial segment continues to outpace the overall market, and our Devices and Consumer segment had a great holiday quarter," said CEO Steve Ballmer. "The investments we are making in devices and services that deliver high-value experiences to our customers, and the work we are doing with our partners, are driving strong results and positioning us well for long-term growth."
Numerous changes have hit Microsoft in the last year, not the least of which were a reorganization of its divisions, its acquisition of Nokia, and the announcement of Ballmer's impending retirement. Last month, the head of the search committee said he expected a new CEO to be named early this year.
