Archos outs a new series of tablets: the Neon

Image
Archos will be releasing three tablets in a new line of products called “Neon.” The three models are the Archos 90 Neon, 97 Neon, and 101 Neon. The model numbers coordinate with the screen sizes of each tablet (9.0”, 9.7” and 10.1”, respectively.) Based on the specs of the tablets, the Neon line seems to be geared towards the lower end. The 90 is rocking a display with an 800×480 resolution, the 97 with 1024×768, and 101 with 1024×600. On the software side of things, all three of the Neons will come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, kind of a letdown, considering that Kit-Kat has been out for a little while. Under the hood, the 90, 97, and 101 are pretty much identical. All of the models have quad core A9 processors (the 90 and 101 run at 1.4GHZ, the 97 at 1.6GHZ), 1GB RAM, 8GB storage with microSD card slots (up to 64GB) front and rear facing cameras, and of course, WiFi. The tablets will have access to the Google Play Store, so you can start installing applications

Next update to Windows 8.1 will allegedly make booting to desktop the default

Image
Continuing its crusade of making a U-turn on pretty much every decision it made recently, Microsoft will now let boot directly to the desktop mode in Windows 8.1 bypassing the generally disliked Metro-style Start screen altogether. Although this feature was added in Windows 8.1, the next update to it will make it the default option. Microsoft has apparently been taking user feedback into consideration that suggested majority of Windows 8.1 users are still on keyboard and mouse setup and prefer to go to the desktop mode directly instead of the Metro-style interface that is more optimized for touchscreen devices. Because of this Microsoft is slowly making Windows 8.1 more desktop user friendly. They added the Start button back in Windows 8.1 and the next update is said to make Metro-style apps more like desktop apps by letting you pin them to the taskbar and having a close button to quit the app. Most of the recent updates to Windows 8.1 have been to make it more lik

SwiftKey Note now available on iOS

Image
Few days ago we talked about the SwiftKey Note app for iOS, which was leaked on Twitter. Now the app has been officially unveiled and is available for download for free on the iPhone and iPad. SwiftKey Note is a simple note-taking app for your iOS device. But where it differs from other note-taking app is that it has its own custom keyboard, that uses the same algorithm as the SwiftKey keyboard on Android. This means you will get the same telepathic level of prediction and almost always accurate auto-correct system at your fingertips. The keyboard mimics the design of the iOS 7 keyboard so iOS users will feel right at home. But once you start typing you’ll see that it provides suggestions to what you’re typing above the keyboard. You can tap on them to complete the word or type something that doesn’t exist in the dictionary and then tap on the word above to save it. There doesn’t seem to be a way to sync your saved words, though, as there is on Android. SwiftKey h

32GB Nexus 7 (2012) discounted to £99 in the UK

Image
UK retailer Zavvi has slashed the price of the Nexus 7 (2012) 32GB model to £99 – a whopping £80 off its usual retail price. Before you rush to order one yourself, though, be mindful that this is not for a brand-new unit, but for a refurbished one. Still, Zavvi claims this is a “manufacturer grade A refurb”, which means it should be the next best thing. Shipments will commence on February 3 and it’s not clear how much 2012 Nexus 7′s are in stock. The latest, 32GB model of the 2013 Nexus 7 costs £239 from the Google Play Store, making the original look like a great value. Granted, you don’t get the higher-resolution display and buffed up internals, but the original Nexus 7 still packs a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 chipset and runs the latest Android 4.4 KitKat. Follow the source link below to check out the offer and hurry up if you don’t want to miss out.

Best Buy cuts Surface Pro price by $400

Image
Now that we have the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 available the original is seeing its price cut down and Best Buy is leading the charge with a $400 drop leaving the retail price at $500 which is a really good deal. According to TheVerge the deal is good from Friday to Sunday but a Best Buy sales representative has told CNET it could go all week. The $500 price tag is getting you a 128 GB Surface Pro with a 10.6″ 1080p touchscreen of the ClearType HD variety, magnesium-like VaporMg body, 720p cameras on either side, a Core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM. Microsoft also has a good deal on its Surface Pro, selling it at $600 .

Google releases Q4 and fiscal year 2013 earnings

Image
The team at Google should be all smiles today as the mega-giant corporation saw their profits raise by 17% from last year. The company's total revenue was a staggering $16.86 Billion for Q4 2013 alone. Larry Page, CEO of Google, had this to say: "We ended 2013 with another great quarter of momentum and growth. Google's standalone revenue was up 22% year on year, at $15.7 billion. We made great progress across a wide range of product improvements and business goals. I'm also very excited about improving people's lives even more with continued hard work on our user experiences." The majority of Google's revenues came from their owned sites, generating $10.55 billion. For an in-depth look at the report, click on the source link below. Looks like Google's reign won't be over anytime soon, at this rate.

Nokia Lumia 720 starts receiving the Lumia Black update

Image
The Nokia Black update is now available for the Lumia 720 as owners have reached us to report they are now enjoying the latest Nokia extras on their handsets. The Nokia Lumia Black update brings the Glance screen feature, support for Bluetooth 4.0 and Nokia Beamer (which the 720 doesn't get due to the 1GB RAM requirement). Early adopters report that the Glance screen works perfectly as works well with the newly the double tap to wake feature, which also came as part of the update. The phone also feels snappier, according to some reports. The Lumia 720 update means that the majority of the Nokia Lumia lineup has already received the Black update. This includes the Lumia 520 , Lumia 625 , Lumia 920 as well as the Lumia 1020 AT&T variant. The Lumia 620 is the only one that yet to receive the enhancement suite. Nokia released a three minute video overview of the Lumia Black update, which we covered in our blog .

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo unveiled, we have live photos

Image
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo and Note 3 Neo LTE+ got officially unveiled (by Samsung Poland). The Neo is the long rumored budget version of the Note 3. It provides the well-known S Pen experience at a lower price tag. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo Compared to the original Galaxy Note 3, Both smartphones have pretty much the same weight, thickness and battery capacity, but the Neo is slightly shorter in lenght and width. Design-wise, the new smartphone is almost a complete match of the original Note 3, complete with the faux-leather plastic back. The Galaxy Note 3 Neo however has a slightly smaller screen (5.5-inch vs. 5.7-inch) with only 720p resolution (as opposed to 1080p) and the camera is only 8MP with 1080p video recording (as opposed to 13MP with 4K video recording). There are differences in the used chipset as well. In fact it's under the hood that we find the most notable difference between the two newly announced Note 3 Neo models. The Samsung Gala

Galaxy S4 and S4 mini get Black Editions with leather backs

Image
Black is the new black – the Samsung Galaxy S4 Black Edition borrows the faux leather back of the Galaxy Note 3 and marks the introduction of yet another Galaxy S4 version (the 1001st by our count). Snarkiness aside, we quite liked the faux leather back on the Note 3. Selling just the back cover would have meant current Galaxy S4 owners can get in on this too and the Note 3 back comes in other shades too (white and red, for example). It's still an option for those who don't appreciate the plastic, fingerprint magnet back of the standard Galaxy S4. The specs are exactly the same as the I9505 though, the Snapdragon 600 version of the phone, rather than the updated S4 Advance models (with Snapdragon 800). That goes for the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini too, as the compact phone will be getting a Black Edition of its own. This model has the same specs as its global counterpart too. The big Galaxy S4 Black Edition will hit Russia (and presumably other markets) i

SIM-free Moto X price cut to £300 in the UK

Image
The Moto X arrived at UK shores just yesterday and the phone's £380 launch price has already been reduced. Clove UK is offering a significant price cut to £300 and has the phone in stock, with today shipping. Note that this is for a SIM-free 16GB version, the 32GB model will not be available in the UK. Most other retailers still list the phone at the £380 price, sometimes even higher, and have not started shipping yet. Amazon UK does have the Moto X at £350, so it's worth keeping an eye if they'll drop the price further. The price in the rest of Europe was initially announced as €430, but Amazon Germany has it at €350 (shipping on February 6). Both black and white models are available (in the UK the white one is exclusive to Phones4u) and so is the 32GB version (at €400). In other European countries the Moto X 16GB is €400 (Spain) and even the full €420 (France, Italy). We'd wait a few days for the device to start shipping to see if there will

Samsung Galaxy Core, Fame Light and Trend go LeFleur

Image
Samsung is feeling all romantic ahead of Valentine's day and converted three of its available smartphones into LaFleur members - namely the Galaxy Core , Trend and Fame Lite. The LaFleur version changes nothing on the smartphone's innards but goes for a more feminine look on the outside and adding a wallpaper to suite the panels on the inside. Samsung Galaxy Core LeFleur Recently we saw the Galaxy S4 mini in LeFleur colors and also got a peek at the bigger, Galaxy S4 with the same look. Samsung Galaxy Trend LeFleur There's no word when to expect these particular LeFleur edition devices to hit outside of Russia but Samsung usually releases the lineup in January of every year. Samsung Galaxy Fame Lite LeFleur The Galaxy Fame Lite is the only one in the bunch not going for predominant purple scheme and opts for white plastic with purple accents on the back and front.

Lenovo acquires Motorola Mobility from Google for $3 billion

Image
Google announced that it has reached an agreement to sell Motorola Mobility to Lenovo. The Chinese electronics giant will pay approximately $2.91 billion for the smartphones business with $1.41 billion due at the deal’s closing in cash and ordinary shares, and the remaining $1.5 billion as a three-year promissory note. As part of the deal, Google will retain the bulk of Motorola’s massive patent portfolio, including current applications and invention disclosures. Lenovo will acquire about 2,000 patents alongside the Motorola Mobility brand and its trademarks. The Chinese company will receive a license for the remainder of Motorola’s portfolio which will remain at Mountain View. After acquiring Motorola for $12.5 billion in 2012, Google raised the company’s profile last year with the launch of the characterful Moto X and Moto G duo of smartphones. Despite its efforts however, Motorola Mobility continued losing money each quarter. Motorola’s acquisition will g

Project Ara will remain in Google after the sale of Motorola

Image
Shortly after the official announcement about Lenovo’s acquisition of Motorola, a word got out on the fate of the Project Ara modular phone . Motorola’s Advanced Technology group which developed the device, as well as its patents will remain with Google. According to people familiar with the subject, the division behind Project Ara will be integrated within the Android team at Google. The team of almost one hundred people will make a short trip to relocate from Sunnyvale to Google’s offices in Mountain View, California. Going forward, work on Project Ara is to be accelerated using Google’s considerable resources. We will be keeping a close eye on any developments.

More Nokia X (Normandy) spy shots emerge

Image
The Nokia X, aka Normandy, is out in the open again – spy shots reveal a device with looks that won't be out of place in the Asha line. That's exactly where the Nokia X is headed allegedly, now that Nokia has sold its smartphone business and the Asha line just can't compete with dirt-cheap Androids. Nokia X (Normandy) spy shots The alleged specs for the device are a 4" WVGA screen, dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 512MB RAM, 5MP camera, 4GB of expandable storage and optional dual-SIM. It's essentially an Android rendition of the Lumia 520 . It won't be mainline Android though but rather a Nokia customization with Google's Play services swapped out for Nokia ones. Amazon did it and Nokia already has great maps to replace GMaps, but what of the rest? Well, Nokia is holding an event on February 24 , just before the MWC gets into full swing and we'll know more then.

Apple launches iOS 7.0.5 iPhone update in several regions

Image
Apple has just launched iOS 7.0.5 update for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. It makes some minor bugs go away and fixes network provisioning for Chinese models. According to user reports the new update is rolling out in China, Croatia, Germany and the UK with the rest of the world seemingly missing on it. It seems the update targets specific model iPhones and won't be available for all iDevices. Meanwhile Apple is working hard on the upcoming iOS 7.1 update that should hit all compatible iGadgets worldwide very soon.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact goes on sale in UK and Germany

Image
Sony has started selling the Xperia Z1 Compact in a couple of new major European countries after the debut in Sweden . In Germany, Amazon sells the miniature flagship for €499 for all color variants of the phone (black, yellow, pink and white). The phone is also available at a number of other German phone retailers for prices starting at €489. That's €30 less than the price at which the phone made its entrance in Sweden almost a week ago. In the UK, the Xperia Z1 Compact is available for purchase directly from Sony's website. The unlocked version costs £449. Many other UK retailers are expected to have the phone in stock around mid-February. If you happen to be an O2 customer, you might want to learn about its offers. The pay-as-you-go price is £479.99, which is higher than elsewhere, but you can opt for a 2-year contract and get it for free. As long as you are willing to get a service plan worth £37/month or more, that is. Be sure to check out our fu

Sony Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra receive a small firmware update

Image
Sony has announced via its official Twitter account a new software update for the the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra has started rolling. It's not the Andorid 4.4 KitKat release that you may have been hoped for, but any update is good news, right? Besides this one does add several news features, so it should really make a difference. The new firmware, according to Sony, "brings display, BT music streaming, email, Wi-Fi improvements and more". It is rolling out gradually, but should eventually reach every Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra unit out there. Early adopters confirm that the update comes with a new entry in the display settings - White Balance that we first met on the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. It lets you manually tweak the individual color channels so you get the perfect color balance. Currently the update is available only via Sony's PC Companion and Mac Bridge but it's unclear if it will be becoming available OTA later on or you will hav

AdDuplex: WP landscape skewed towards the low-end

Image
Another monthly AdDuplex report is out and it shows that trend in the Windows Phone market of the low end dominating and the high-end barely there continues. The Nokia Lumia 520, which has long been the most popular Windows Phone device, grew even further and it alone holds over 30% of the WP market. Add the Lumia 521 (a carrier version of the 520) and the Lumia 520 now accounts for over a third (34.1%) of all Microsoft-powered devices. Note that this is includes the discontinued Windows Phone 7 branch. If we don't count those, then four out of every ten WP8 phones is a Lumia 520 (with the 521 adding just over 4%). Meanwhile the flagships are nowhere to be seen in the Top 10. The Lumia 1020 moved from 13th place to 11th, while the 1520 jumped from 19th to 16th. Another entry-level phone is making gains though. The Lumia 625 , a 4.7" handset close to the Lumia 520 in specs, went from 10th to 8th by securing 4.5% of the market. Nokia/Microsoft's share

Google Glass Mini-Games Feature Augmented Reality

Go skeet shooting with your voice. Third-party developers are already working on apps to shape how the world interacts with Google Glass. But perhaps as a primer, Google has just released a video showcasing five mini-games, reports Geek . While the various games are pretty simple, they do illustrate how developers might use the technology to offer unique experiences. Essentially, each game takes advantage of at least one of Glass' functions, be it the accelerometer for balancing a stack of blocks, or voice-recognition to shoot a clay pigeon out of the air. "We hope our experiments provide some inspiration for getting started with game design on Glass," reads a post on the Google Developers page . "We can’t wait to see how much further you go." Granted, you still can't run out to purchase your own pair of Google Glass

Google Glass Gets Stylish Prescription Frames

Four new Google Glass frames for those who require corrective lenses. Despite how interesting the technology behind Google Glass may be, the hardware isn't exactly aesthetically pleasing. Thankfully, Google has finally unveiled its initial offering of prescription frames for Google Glass that not only make them more attractive, but also opens up an official way for those who require corrective lenses to enjoy the wearable. Available for $225 each, the Isabelle Olsson-designed frames come in four different styles and each are made out of titanium. The actual Google Glass unit bolts onto the frames, so while it would still be obvious that you have a small computer strapped to your head, they do appear more normal looking than the lense-free frames that have been available. Prescription lenses are not included with the cost of the frames and you'll have to work with your optometrist or another eye care professional to obtain them. Google has partnered with visi
