Hydrogen OS 3.0 for OnePlus 3 and 3T is now live

Chinese manufacturer OnePlus just released version 3.0 of its Hydrogen Android OS. This new version is based on Android 7.0 Nougat and some users have been reporting slightly better battery life, compared to the latest Nougat OxygenOS update.

Google Services running on H2OS 3.0If this is the first time you are hearing of Hydrogen OS or H2OS, it is more than understandable. It is the Android ROM OnePlus develops specifically for its local market. It features some UI differences to better suite local tastes and also lacks Google Play Services and the rest of the Google Apps package, since those don't really work in China. The latter might very well be the reason why certain users have been reporting better battery endurance after flashing the eastern ROM.

If you are already running H2OS on your OnePlus 3 or 3T, then the new version should be available as an OTA. OnePlus has been promising to merge the two branches for some time now, but no progress has been reported on the matter, yet. However, you can flash it on international units as well. The official OnePlus forum has the download links and there is an English language option for the UI. If you decide to mix things up and go for it, we suggest checking out this XDA thread as well. Also, if you do use Google services on your device, be sure to pick up a Gapps package to flash alongside the 1.2GB ROM. OnePlus has a version of the Google Play Store in the Hydrogen OS app store for an easy install as well.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android drops Office 365 subscription requirement

Yesterday, Microsoft finally announced the Office suite of apps for the iPad, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But along with the new announcement, Microsoft also made a quiet change to its existing Android app. Just like its iOS counterparts, the Android version of the Office Mobile app required an Office 365 subscription to actually be used to create and edit documents. Surprisingly, Microsoft has dropped that requirement now, which means you can access the app fully without having to spend a dime. The app still only lets you create Word and Excel files, with no way to create or edit PowerPoints and all your files will be saved on your OneDrive instead of locally. Also, there isn’t really a version optimized for Android tablets yet. Still, it’s a free app so you can’t complain much about it.

Samsung releases Gear 2 and Gear Fit SDK

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo went official just three days ago, running on a Tizen-based OS. This time around though Samsung has confirmed both smartwatches will support third-party apps. The lack of third-party apps was a major drawback on the first Gear watch and we are happy to see Samsung is changing its strategy. So, just as promised at the announcement, the SDK for the Gear 2 duo is now live. Even better, the SDK also supports the Tizen-based Galaxy Fit band, so it will also welcome third-party apps once it hits the shelves. Finally, Samsung is launching another SDK for the S-Health services. Both SDK kits are now available for download on Samsung’s Developer Portal.

Huawei is still only giving us teasing glances at the new Ascend Mate 7 but we have leaked photos of the upcoming phablet to gawk at. The latest batch featrues "in the wild" photos rather than the photos taken by TENAA during the certification process. Huawei Ascend Mate 7 photos The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is the third generation and while the first two were mid-rangers, this one sits higher up with a 6" 1080p screen, a 13MP / 1080p camera and a Kirin 920 chipset (octa-core CPU, Mali-T625MP4 GPU). It has a fingerprint scanner on its metal back, a la HTC One Max. The Ascend Mate 7 will be unveiled at IFA, Huawei's event is scheduled for Thursday, September 4.
