5.8-inch OLED iPhone 8 to have a stainless steel frame and glass back, iPhone 7s keeps aluminum
Not a day goes by without one or more iPhone-related rumors, despite
the fact that we're still many months away from the new devices'
introduction this fall. Anyway, a new report from "sources from the
upstream supply chain" confirms a previous rumor about the new iPhone 8 sporting a stainless steel frame
and a glass sandwich design. That's the 5.8-inch model to ship with an
OLED panel made by Samsung, by the way. This is going to be the most
premium iPhone yet, commanding a $1,000+ price. Its stainless steel frame will be made by Foxconn and Jabil Circuit.
On the other hand, the 4.7-inch iPhone 7s that will debut alongside the iPhone 8 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus this year is expected to go with an aluminum alloy for its chassis, just like the previous three generations before it. This will be manufactured by Catcher Technology.
The design for the 7s Plus has yet to be confirmed, but we have no reason to doubt that it will use the same material as the smaller 7s. Thus these two "s" models will probably feature the exact same design as the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, while packing some upgraded innards. That's par for the course for an "s" year in Apple's world. The novelty this time around will be the iPhone 8, with its more premium design and materials and higher price tag.
