Acer Jade Primo will ship with Continuum dock, keyboard, and mouse

Image
Acer has officially confirmed today that it will bundle a Continuum dock, a keyboard, as well as a mouse with its Jade Primo Windows 10 phone when it launches. This makes Acer the first Windows 10 handset manufacturer to go this route, allowing people to take advantage of Microsoft's vision of a phone that 'turns' into a PC from the moment they receive it. Taking advantage of the Continuum feature that's built into Windows 10, you'll be able to use the docked Jade Primo with a monitor and the bundled keyboard and mouse pretty much like a real Windows PC. The Acer Jade Primo boasts a 5.5-inch 1080p Super AMOLED touchscreen, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 808 SoC, 3GB of RAM, a 21 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash, an 8 MP selfie snapper, and a USB Type-C port. It's expected to be cheaper than Microsoft's own Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. Source | Via

New Vimeo update brings picture-in-picture and split screen support for iOS 9

Image
Video streaming service Vimeo has updated its iOS app, bumping it to version 5.6. The updated app now supports various new iOS 9 features and also contains several bug fixes. The update brings support for picture-in-picture mode on the iPad. This means that you can now continue watching a video on Vimeo in a smaller window while doing other stuff, like Web surfing and checking email. The new app also supports split screen mode. In addition, you can now also search for Vimeo videos via Spotlight, and the app works better with Chromecast. The updated app is now available for download from the App Store (click the Source link below). Source | Image via

Oppo R7s will reportedly also have a 4GB RAM option

The R7s is set to be unveiled during this year's Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX), which is scheduled to take place in Dubai from October 18 to 22. Via

New ZTE Nubia X8 photos tease resistive volume rockers and possible October 15 launch

Image
In today's highly-competitive and overflowing market, staying relevant and up to par with competitors is a tough challenge, but standing out from the crowd and gathering gazes is even harder. A new eccentric and bold design is definitely a plan, but that has become increasingly difficult in the current mobile market, dominated by the boring "slab" handset design. Still, ZTE seems to have managed to find a way to stick out with the upcoming Nubia X8. A new set of photos, recently shared by the OEM on Chinese social outlet Weibo, seem to show a new control design for the phone, featuring resistive touch volume rockers. From the looks of things, the X8 will have a set of three grooves carved right into the side if the frame, two of which are touch operated volume controls. It is hard to tell whether the power button will be resistive as well, but, judging by the space around the button, it could also be a standard physical one, albeit quite shallow.

Next OnePlus phone stops by TENAA, new pictures outed

Image
The upcoming OnePlus Mini or OnePlus X was certified by the US FCC just last week, and now it's already been given the go-ahead for sales in China too. TENAA, the government agency in charge of such things over there, has publicized the phone's certification today. And as always, TENAA is also giving us an idea of what the next OnePlus smartphone will look like. Although the quality of its pictures is less than stellar, at least we have something to look at until OnePlus decides to finally make the Mini (or X) official. The shot of the back clearly shows the exact same device that's been at the FCC, while the front features the same capacitive touch button arrangement as the already available OnePlus 2. Also similar to the Chinese startup's current flagship is the notification switch on the left. And once again it's impossible to tell if the back cover is made out of plastic or glass. The handset does seem to have a metal frame. TENAA has a

Seriously, there is a Pepsi smartphone coming our way

Image
The smartphone landscape is about to become considerably more sugary, ladies and gentlemen. PepsiCo confirmed to Reuters that it will launch a line of Pepsi smartphones and accessories in China. PepsiCo will utilize a licensing partner for the venture. The first smartphone is rumored to carry the epic name Pepsi P1. Specs-wise, the Pepsi P1 will reportedly feature a MediaTek MT6592 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and 5.5” 1080p display. A 13MP main camera, 5MP front-facing unit, and 3,000mAh battery are also said to be on board. Pepsi P1 will boot Android 5.1 Lollipop. The oddly branded smartphone is expected to launch in China later this month with $205 price tag. There is no word on a diet version for the time being. Source 1 (in Chinese) | Source 2 | Via

Could Li-Fi be the new Wi-Fi?

Image
Professor Harald Haas coined the term Li-Fi in 2011. The technology uses ordinary LED room lights to transmit data around the house. The disadvantage of traditional Wi-Fi routers is that multiple devices in a space can interfere with each other. Li-Fi however can use multiple lights in a room without interference. As connected devices become more popular it is predicted that Wi-Fi networks will not be able to cope with demand. Li-Fi enables devices to use their in-built stand by LED lights to transmit data. As LED lights become more popular, multiple companies are looking into using Li-Fi including, Disney Research and the Berlin-based, Fraunhofer Institute.

Tesla v7.0 update brings autopilot to Model S

Tesla has released an update for the Model S that brings an important new feature: autopilot. Autopilot on the Model S will enable features such as auto steering, lane changing activated by the turn signal, and auto parking. The version 7 update also has some other features, such as a new UI and the Model S without autopilot hardware will be getting improved climate control, improved efficiency and performance for RWD Model S, and improved hill start assist that works on all surfaces. Tesla had initially began rolling out the update in beta version to 600-700 early access users back in August in the US and parts of Europe. The version rolling out now is the final version and available to all customers. Source

Elephone ELE smartwatch: affordable, round, feature-packed

Image
If you've heard of Elephone, you're probably thinking "phones with big batteries," but it turns out the company put together a very impressive Android Wear watch. It should be available soon for $115 shipped and it checks all the right boxes. The Elephone ELE smartwatch has a large, round 1.5" display with 320 x 320px resolution. It's a TFT without the "flat tire" design that Moto couldn’t fix even in the second generation. It's one of the biggest round screens on a smartwatch. The watch is powered by MediaTek's MT2601 chipset, which was specifically designed for wearables. It has two Cortex-A7 cores at 1.2GHz, a Mali-400 GPU and 512MB RAM. There's 4GB of storage too (note that they are listed in giga bits in the source link). The ELE smartwatch is well equipped – a metal casing with an IP67 rating, changeable metal link or leather wrist strap, a heart rate sensor (something the affordable Zenwatch 2 does not ha

Samsung infographics detail Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 premium features

Image
To keep up with tough competition on both the technical and media fronts, Samsung is always refreshing its commercials and putting the word out to current and prospective customers. This time around, it is in the form of infographics about the company's latest pair of flagship phablets – the S6 edge+ and the Note5. These promotional materials were launched alongside a set of new commercials and generally seem like a pretty good and most of all, informative idea. Tech savvy people and especially those of us already buried knee deep in the realm often tend to forget that what we see when exploring a new product can be easily be left out by the average consumer. Thus, anything that brings a little clarity to the Swiss army knife on steroids that a contemporary mobile phone has become is pretty welcome. Also, it is worth noting that Samsung has done a good job really focusing most on the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Note5 exclusive features that indeed set them apart from o

ZTE reveals Axon mini's specs; device goes on sale in China

Image
When ZTE unveiled the Axon mini back in July this year, not much was revealed about the device except a 5.2" Super AMOLED display and force touchscreen. However, the company has now shared the detailed specs of the handset, as well as confirmed its global availability. Specs-wise, the handset is powered by a Snapdragon 616 chipset with octa-core processor and Adreno 405 GPU, and sports a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED FHD 2.5D curved-edge screen. It comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB expandable internal memory, and packs in a 2800mAh battery. In terms of camera, the Axon mini features a 13MP rear unit (with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) that the company claims offers a focus time of just 0.1 seconds) and a 8MP front shooter. It comes with a pressure-sensitive touch screen, and its body is made from Boeing 787 aircraft-grade aluminum-titanium alloy. The device also supports multiple biometric authentication options, including fingerprint, voice control, and eye-scan.

Xiaomi to hold an event on October 19 - Mi 5 is the likely star

Image
Xiaomi has sent out press invites for an event next week. While a teaser image accompanying the invite (shown below) suggests a new product launch on October 19 (next Monday), there isn't much known about it at the moment. The most likely candidate is the Mi 5 smartphone, which has been the subject of numerous rumors and leaks till now. Although previous reports have suggested that the device would be launched either in November or December, an October launch cannot be completely ruled out. However, if this does happen, it'd be safe to say that the handset won't feature the Snapdragon 820 SoC as the first devices with the chipset are expected to arrive in December at the earliest. Another possible launch candidate is the Mi Pad 2. There were reports earlier that the device could be announced in Q3, a time frame which has already passed. However, that time-frame was never confirmed by Xiaomi, so an October 19 launch for the Mi Pad 2 is still a possibili

Apple News for iOS 9 is not available to users in China

Apple News, one of the hot new features found in iOS 9 is not available to users in China. The Cupertino tech giant has reportedly pulled the plug on the service in the country, which is its second largest market behind only the United States. The manufacturer has reportedly opted to block access to Apple News altogether, as opposed to trying to censor its content. The Chinese requirement has a set of censorship rules that foreign companies need to follow in order to do business in the country. The News app’s deactivation in China affects even iOS users who visit the country from abroad. Apple has declined to officially comment on the subject. Source

HTC One A9 (Aero) dummy unit images leaked

Image
HTC is scheduled to announce a new device on October 20 and for all we know, it's going to be the One A9. Not the best kept of secrets, the smartphone has been photographed on a few occasions already, but now we get a more detailed look at it, albeit through a dummy unit. The leaked shots, courtesy of @OnLeaks , show the One A9 (conceived as HTC Aero) from multiple angles leaving little to the imagination. As a whole, it's the iPhone 6 lookalike we've come to expect from previous leaks. There's the enormous bottom bezel, which has no excuse for its existence, now that the Back/Home/Task switcher buttons have moved to the display and the chin only needs to accommodate the fingerprint sensor. The back has the contrasting antenna bands, a necessary eye-sore on metal-built smartphones. The camera lens is sticking out by a millimeter, but it's dead center, so Apple's legal department can remain at rest. HTC One A9 dummy unit What's offs

The camera combo is the same 16MP/8MP affair, and even battery capacity is identical at 2,700mAh. BlackBerry Priv rumored to carry a $630 price tag

Image
BlackBerry's first Android-powered handset Priv will carry a price tag of RMB 3,999 (around $630) in China, according to renowned Chinese leakster Leaksfly , who revealed the information on Weibo. The revelation came just days after BlackBerry CEO John Chen said that the device will come with a high-end price tag. "We'll make the phone financially affordable to get, whether that's by installments or something else," he had said during the Code/Mobile conference last week. Last week, a lucky Redditor also got a chance to handle the Priv. He noted that the handset has a sharp screen and is thinner than the Galaxy Note5, although its 18MP camera took longer to lock focus when compared to the Galaxy phablet. Via 1 2

Elon Musk takes a jab at Apple, says it only hires people Tesla fires

Image
Tesla's CEO Elon Musk is currently in Germany, discussing the future of electric vehicles with the local government. However this didn't stop him from taking digs at Apple while interacting with media. During an interview with German business newspaper Handelsblatt yesterday, when he was asked to comment on Apple hiring Tesla's engineers for its car efforts, Musk revealed that the people hired by the iPhone maker are those which were fired by the automaker. He added that this is the reason he jokingly calls Apple the Tesla Graveyard . "If you don't make it at Tesla, you go work at Apple," he said On whether he considers Apple as a serious competition, he took another jab at the Cupertino-based company, saying making a car is not as easy as making a smartphone or a smartwatch. "Did you ever take a look at the Apple Watch? (laughs) No, seriously: It's good that Apple is moving and investing in this direction," he said. "

Report: Job cuts are coming to Twitter

Image
Just days after co-founder Jack Dorsey - who is currently also the chief executive and chairman of payments startup Square - was announced as Twitter's new CEO, there are reports that the company is planning cost cutting measures, including job cuts. The layoffs are said to be company-wide, and are expected to be announced as soon as next week. There was, however, no word on which specific departments would be affected the most. In addition to job cuts, the microblogging company is also stopping a plan that focused on expanding its headquarters in San Francisco. When reached out for comment, a Twitter spokesperson said, “We’re not commenting on rumor and speculation.” For those who aren't aware, Dick Costolo, Twitter's former CEO, stepped down from his position back in July amid mounting concerns over slow user growth. Hulu will launch a VR app next month, in time for Samsung's new Gear VR release

Image
The days when your brain used lack of content as a reasonable excuse not to follow your impulse and buy a VR headset seem to be numbered. For one, Hulu is launching its virtual reality app next month alongside the market release of Samsung's latest Gear VR rig. Not only will the new Oculus-made headset make it easier on your pocket with its $99 asking price, but you'll now have one more source of VR videos to feed into it. Hulu will be offering traditional 2D footage, but will also be working on adapting such content to the new medium. Think "Seinfeld", only you're watching it from inside Jerry's apartment. It doesn't stop there though, and the company is also working on an original series made straight for VR, without a 2D element at all. "The Big One", meanwhile, is a VR short already in production, coming from YouTuber/filmmaker/gamer Freddie Wong. Source

Remote desktop company LogMeIn acquires Lastpass

Image
Popular password management service LastPass has been acquired by LogMeIn (a remote computer-access firm) for a total of $125 million. The deal is expected to close in the coming weeks. "LastPass has a great business, a beloved and award winning product, millions of loyal users, and thousands of great business customers – they are synonymous with the category," said LogMeIn’s Chairman and CEO Michael Simon. "We believe this transaction instantly gives us a market leading position in password management, while also providing a highly favorable foundation for delivering the next generation of identity and access management solutions to individuals, teams and companies." Back in September last year, LogMeIn acquired identity management service Meldium. Simon revealed that while the company will continue supporting both LastPass and Meldium in the near-term, the long-term goal is to merge them into a single offering based on the LastPass servic

Samsung Galaxy A9 spotted in AnTuTu, S620 chipset confirmed

Image
The Samsung Galaxy A9 poked its head above water again, surfacing at the AnTuTu benchmark database. It casts another vote for a 5.5" 1080p screen, even though the naming scheme suggests the A9 should be better than the Galaxy A8 (5.7" 1080p). It's definitely better in terms of chipset – the Snapdragon 620 has next-gen CPU cores and a next-gen GPU. The eight Cortex-72 cores should be much faster than the A53s used in current mid-range octa-cores. The Adreno 510 will also bring a much needed performance boost for 1080p gaming. And there's more RAM, 3GB. There's 32GB of built-in storage, but AnTuTu failed to detect the camera resolution. The Samsung Galaxy A9 (SM-A9000) ran Android 5.1.1 Lollipop when the test was ran (which was most likely a pre-production version). Source | Via

Soak test for Moto X Pure Edition starts soon, could be Android 6.0

Motorola has started sending surveys for a software soak test to owners of the Moto X Pure Edition (2015), which is basically the US version of the Moto X Style sold internationally. Unfortunately the company isn't saying what exact firmware update is the one that the soak test will be sent out for. However, it seems pretty likely that we're talking about Android 6.0 Marshmallow, since no other new versions of the OS have come out from the time the phone was launched. Soak tests are sent out by Motorola to people who sign up for them in order to make sure that its over-the-air rollouts are going to work flawlessly when a new update is then released for every device out there. They are also a good way to spot last minute bugs in the wild. Of course, this could be nothing more than a security patch of some sort, but obviously given Motorola's history of quick Android updates (especially for its unlocked high-end devices) there's also a possibility

Upcoming OnePlus Mini has all of its specs detailed

Image
Before the end of the year, OnePlus will unveil a new, even more affordable device. This has so far been confirmed many times by the Chinese company's management. Yet understandably OnePlus execs haven't disclosed any information about the upcoming device's specs. That said, today a new rumor comes to seemingly reveal all of that. Before we delve into it, however, do note that all of this comes from an anonymous source, and as such you shouldn't take any of it for granted. Furthermore, the source itself claims that these details are from a prototype that's already two months old, which means that certain hardware specs may have changed in the meantime. The phone could be called OnePlus Mini, since it will have a 5-inch touchscreen (with 1080p resolution and 2.5D Gorilla Glass on top). It will be powered by MediaTek's Helio X10 chipset (MT6795T), which comes with a 2.2 GHz octa-core Cortex-A53 CPU. 2GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable eMMC 5

Unannounced OnePlus handset gets pictured at the FCC

Image
Before the end of the year, OnePlus will launch its third smartphone ever, and the second one of 2015, to complement the OnePlus 2 in its portfolio. The new device will probably be smaller than the OnePlus 2, and it may be called either OnePlus X or OnePlus Mini. Not long ago a purported full list of specs for the OnePlus Mini got leaked, and now a new OnePlus handset passed through the FCC. And, unlike what usually happens at the US-based regulatory agency, this time we even get a picture of the phone. The model number for the device you see above is One E1005. This particular version comes with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, an FM radio, a 1.9 GHz processor, as well as support for LTE bands 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 and quad-band GSM. As can be seen in the image, it has a microUSB connector and not a USB Type-C port like the OnePlus 2. It also sports a metal frame, and a back that's either plastic or glass. Its dimensions are supposedly 139.7 x 55.8 x 6.85 mm, but if tru

Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL available for pre-order across Europe

Image
Microsoft's latest flagships Lumia 950 and 950 XL are now available for pre-order across Europe, after being initially listed in the UK only. Retailers in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands, among others, have put up listings of the smartphones with prices being pretty consistent between them. The Lumia 950 XL will set you back €700, and the Lumia 950 goes for €600. Both single and dual SIM versions of the latter have been listed too. In Austria, the newest Lumias will start shipping on November 27, if retailer information is to be trusted, while German users will need to wait until December 10. One of the best things about the smartphones is the Continuum feature. The ability to turn your phone into a portable PC by plugging in an external monitor and a keyboard should in theory make for lighter packing when traveling or save you the expense of a standalone computer. The box that enables it isn't free though, obviously. The Microsoft Display Dock wi
