Open-World Zombie Nightmare An in-depth look at the building, driving, and human emotion in the upcoming XBLA survival game. At first look, it might seem like State of Decay is just another action game set in a zombie-infested town. Snooze, right? But below the surface, so many systems are working in concert that it managed keep me – someone who is bored to death with the undead – completely enthralled for the entire four hours I spent playing it. With the deluge of zombie games on the market, it can be hard for something new to stand out, but Seattle startup Undead Labs’ creation seems to be doing just that. When you start, you’re immediately thrown into the action. No cinematics introduce your character or give you any idea of what’s going on. I found myself in a field, with another man screaming for his life. After helping him dispatch the “

The open world develops in real-time, shaped by player actions, with content determined by their choices and the ever-increasing zombie threat. Release Date : June 2013

STILL THE BEST WORST GAME → April 25, 2013 Few games in this console generation have split the reactions of critics as much as Deadly Premonition. A budget release previously only available on Xbox 360 (outside of Japan), this divisive survival-horror game managed to make its way onto numerous best-of and worst-of lists 2010. Even IGN couldn’t agree on it internally; our UK team praised it for being “ a uniquely unforgettable experience, ” while our US team described it as being “ awful in nearly every way ”. I tend to agree with the former, and am pleased that this PlayStation 3-only Director’s Cut rights a few of the wrongs that turned some people off of that experience – most

I cannae take much more of this! → April 26, 2013 As a life-long fan of the shows and films, I've seen a lot of bad Star Trek in my time... but playing Star Trek: The Game reminded me that it'll never get any easier to see the potential of one of science fiction's greatest universes squandered on a barely serviceable, paint-by-numbers third-person shooter. Terrible animations, dull combat, repetitive puzzles, and rampant bugs wore out Star Trek’s welcome long before its pointless story came to an end. What did I expect from a licensed game released a few weeks ahead of a major

New console may run Windows 8, launch in November and only be available in one model. New rumors have provided additional details regarding alleged functionality in Microsoft ’s next Xbox. An in-depth report from veteran tech blogger Paul Thurrott on Windows IT Pro elaborates on several topics Thurrott covered earlier this month including the next Xbox’s pricing, release date, operating system and more. Entertainment-Only Model According to Thurrott, previous rumors that there will be two versions of the next Xbox are no longer accurate. He notes that Microsoft “originally planned to offer both a ‘full’ version of the next Xbox (with video game playing capabilities) and a lower-end entertainment-oriented version, code-named ‘Yuma,’ that didn't provide gaming capabilities.” However, “plans for Yuma are on hold, and no pure entertainment version of the next Xbox will appear in 2013 (or possibly ever).” Always Online Thurrott notes that the rumo

Let's hope it's not called Xbox 720. Confirming long-standing rumors, Microsoft has said it is ready to unveil the next-gen Xbox at a special event on May 21st. Here's all we know about the system: Xbox What? Microsoft might have placed themselves between a rock and a hard place naming the current Xbox, the Xbox 360. As such, it can't possibly call the next-Xbox 'Xbox 3' or even 'Xbox 4', but rumors in the past year have suggested multiple names for the new system, with the most popular being Xbox 720, Xbox 8, and Xbox Infinity, the latter being the most obvious (and the better) choice. In fact, if this Reddit user is to be believed, Microsoft might call it just that: Specifications Reported specifications for the Xbox 720 are sufficiently impressive: 8 cores @1.6Ghz, DirectX 11-capable GPU (probably an AMD chip), 8 GB of RAM, USB 3.0 and a dedicated slot for Kinect. What is unclear is if Microsoft will use a Blu-ray di

Dead Island: Riptide Review

The Dead Island series returns with more of the same -- which is good and bad news. It’s tempting to simply paste the original Dead Island review here and call it a day. A sequel to 2011’s first-person zombie-di smembering co-op role-playing game, Dead Island Riptide adds a new character, some additional zombies, and boats, but otherwise largely reanimates the same hours of gory decapitations and corpse looting. The action is here in spades, but Riptide doesn't lift a finger to address the original Dead Island's failures. That's not a terrible thing, because for my money Dead Island – and by extension Riptide – nails what a zombie RPG should be. Loot the island, upgrade machetes from flimsy metal to powerful electrified killing machines, and level up your character with a seemingly endless supply of experience points. The “DING” of hitting that next level is a hypnotic device – a Pavlovian trigger – that had me popping open my skill tree and hemming
