Sony Xperia XZ Premium and XZs unveiled

Image
Meet the future of Sony flagships - well, what will be future. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium and its 5.5” 4K are scheduled to land in “late Spring” while the smaller 5.2” Sony Xperia XZs will arrive earlier (in April) to dazzle us with its cool new camera, which Sony will be marketing as Motion Eye. Sony Xperia XZ Premium That’s what Sony calls the camera used on both the XZ Premium and XZs. Its crowning achievement is 960fps slow motion video - that allows to slow down time 4x slower than current cameraphones. It also features an “anti-distortion shutter” which minimizes rolling shutter. Both features are enabled by Sony’s unique memory-stacked sensor. The slow-mo video is captured at 720p, though, not 1080p. Sony Xperia XZ Premium But hold on, we almost buried the lede - the Xperia XZ Premium will be powered by a Snapdragon 835 chipset (we guess that’s the reason behind the delayed launch). The chipset is hooked up to 4GB of RAM and will run Android 7.0, natch

Sony Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra go official with thin bezels, great cameras

Image
Before the XZ came about, our favorite letters of the Xperia alphabet were "XA". Sony revamped both the bezel-light 5” mid-ranger and the selfie-holic 6” Ultra model under the new XA1 heading. Seriously, though, the cameras on these two phones punch well above their weight category. Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra We remember the previous Ultra as being only the second phone with an OIS-enabled selfie camera (behind the HTC 10 flagship). The Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra continues that proud tradition with an impressive 16MP 1/2.6” sensor coupled with a 23mm (equiv.) f/2.0 lens with autofocus and a dedicated LED flash. Again, that’s the selfie camera even though those are main camera specs. The main camera itself is no slouch either - 23MP 1/2.3” sensor, 24mm (equiv.) f/2.0 lens and SteadyShot (no OIS here, though). Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra The other thing we remember about the previous model was its size. The XA1 Ultra brings back the substantial 6” screen with 1080

Watch the Sony MWC press event here

Image
Sony's event should be one of the most action-packed of this year's MWC - yesterday a total of four Xperias got leaked, and some clarifications is undoubtedly needed as to which is which. An Xperia X successor was recently leaked so that should be one, an XZ Premium slide suggests we might be seeing another 4K phone display this year and an Xperia XA follow up is possibly in the works. It will all become clear anytime soon, watch it here as it unfolds.

Over 900,000 Sony PlayStation VR units have been sold in four months

Image
Sony has announced that it has sold over 900,000 units (915,000 to be precise) of its PlayStation VR headset so far. This was revealed by Andrew House, global chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment (the Japanese company's video gaming division). The headset was released back in October last year for $399. House also revealed that the company's internal goal was to sell a million units by mid-April (i.e, in first six months), which looks quite achievable now. The PlayStation VR looks to be quite ahead of its competitors - according to a report from research firm SuperData Research, a total of 243,000 Oculus Rift units and 420,000 HTC Vive units were sold by 2016 end. Talking about the popularity of the device in Japan, House said,"You literally have people lining up outside stores when they know stock is being replenished." He also said the availability situation for the PlayStation VR will improve by April, and revealed that t

Horizon Zero Dawn Review

There’s something about being dropped into a brand new game world and finding it to be dense with deeply considered lore, terrifyingly aggressive creatures, and tantalizing questions that leaves an indelible mark on the memory. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of those games, and it carves out a unique identity within the popular action-roleplaying genre. Coupled with wonderfully flexible combat and a story that touches on unexpectedly profound themes, I found it hard to tear myself away from Horizon even after I’d finished its main campaign some 40 odd hours later.  Horizon’s premise is a big mystery that begs to be solved. A sense of urgency is established from the get-go, as Horizon’s premise is a big mystery that begs to be solved. The questions raised by protagonist Aloy and the primitive, feral machine-infested open world she inhabits kept me guessing throughout: what’s at the centre of it all? Although Horizon suffers from occasionally corny dialogue that belies

Nioh Review

Image
Nioh owes a lot to Dark Souls. That’s a phrase you hear all the time these days, but in this case it’s more accurate than most. From its demanding but rewarding combat to its labyrinthine levels full of thrilling danger and secrets, the influence of FromSoftware’s action RPG series undeniably forms the foundation for Team Ninja’s latest endeavor. But Nioh also boldly asserts a fresh and surprising identity of its own with an intricately layered combat system that allows just enough room for customization while still adhering to the interesting constraints of its stamina-based framework, forcing you to adapt your playstyle by the second. A welcoming variety of foes to face, clever bosses to take down, and a story that’s equal parts endearing and terrifying make every step in Nioh’s long journey even more exciting than the last. Nioh’s story functions mostly as interesting flavor for your adventure. You play a fictional
