iOS 10.1 is now available, brings Portrait Mode to the iPhone 7 Plus

After many weeks of beta testing (both developer-only and public), Apple is today releasing the finalized version of iOS 10.1. The latest update for the company's mobile operating system has the usual assortment of bug fixes and performance improvements that you'd associate with a .1 release, but it does also bring one big new feature to the table.
If you have an iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.1 will enable Portrait Mode for its rear camera. This feature was presented last month when the new iPhones became official, but it didn't ship with iOS 10. It essentially lets you add bokeh to your shots. Since that's best used when capturing images where people are in the foreground, Apple thought "Portrait Mode" was a fitting name. With this mode on, the software will automatically blur the background in such pictures, letting the person (or animal) you're capturing stand out that much more.
Do note that Portrait Mode is still labeled as being in beta, so your mileage while using it may vary. Anyway, it's an option now, so if you don't like bokeh, maybe stay away from Instagram in the next few days. One final consideration: Portrait Mode is only available on the iPhone 7 Plus because it uses its secondary rear camera sensor to create that effect.

Microsoft Office Mobile for Android drops Office 365 subscription requirement

Yesterday, Microsoft finally announced the Office suite of apps for the iPad, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. But along with the new announcement, Microsoft also made a quiet change to its existing Android app. Just like its iOS counterparts, the Android version of the Office Mobile app required an Office 365 subscription to actually be used to create and edit documents. Surprisingly, Microsoft has dropped that requirement now, which means you can access the app fully without having to spend a dime. The app still only lets you create Word and Excel files, with no way to create or edit PowerPoints and all your files will be saved on your OneDrive instead of locally. Also, there isn’t really a version optimized for Android tablets yet. Still, it’s a free app so you can’t complain much about it.

Samsung releases Gear 2 and Gear Fit SDK

Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo went official just three days ago, running on a Tizen-based OS. This time around though Samsung has confirmed both smartwatches will support third-party apps. The lack of third-party apps was a major drawback on the first Gear watch and we are happy to see Samsung is changing its strategy. So, just as promised at the announcement, the SDK for the Gear 2 duo is now live. Even better, the SDK also supports the Tizen-based Galaxy Fit band, so it will also welcome third-party apps once it hits the shelves. Finally, Samsung is launching another SDK for the S-Health services. Both SDK kits are now available for download on Samsung’s Developer Portal.

Huawei is still only giving us teasing glances at the new Ascend Mate 7 but we have leaked photos of the upcoming phablet to gawk at. The latest batch featrues "in the wild" photos rather than the photos taken by TENAA during the certification process. Huawei Ascend Mate 7 photos The Huawei Ascend Mate 7 is the third generation and while the first two were mid-rangers, this one sits higher up with a 6" 1080p screen, a 13MP / 1080p camera and a Kirin 920 chipset (octa-core CPU, Mali-T625MP4 GPU). It has a fingerprint scanner on its metal back, a la HTC One Max. The Ascend Mate 7 will be unveiled at IFA, Huawei's event is scheduled for Thursday, September 4.
