iPhone SE teardown shows hardware ranging from iPhone 5 to 6s

Image
The Apple iPhone SE is a 6s in a 5s body, but Chipworks dug into the internals and it turns out the story is more complicated than that. It straddles multiple generations - from the iPhone 5 selfie camera to the iPhone 6s chipset, a whopping four generations. The Apple A9 chipset is brand new and the SK Hynix-made LPDDR4 2GB memory matches the 6s as well. The NFC, audio chips and motion sensor are from that generation as well. The storage appears to be from the 6s as well, but an earlier 19nm chip instead of the 15nm being shipped now. The Qualcomm modem from the earlier iPhone 6 model while the touchscreen controller goes back to the iPhone 5s. Using the images and info from Chipworks, I labeled the parts on the motherboard with the iPhone generation they come from. Source | Via

A 400-ton hydraulic press crushes the Galaxy S7 Edge in a dramatic video

Image
There's a plethora of videos on YouTube showing the Galaxy S7 edge being abused. But this is the first time we witness a 400-ton hydraulic press crushing Samsung's latest smartphone. The result is exactly what you think it is. The Galaxy S7 edge becomes a whole lot thinner. Happily, there's a lot of visual effects, including smoke, flames and sparks thanks to the phone's battery. Check out the video below to see exactly how much. What are your favorite Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge torture videos? Source | Via

LG shows the full G5 Jason Statham commercial

Image
After teasing us with a few short trailer of its latest ad campaign for the G5, LG has finally released what looks to be the full version of the video. However, we sincerely hope that this is merely the first episode in a series of videos as it is just so incredibly entertaining. Jason Statham simply knocks this role out of the park, or rather these twenty or so roles, as he plays every character in the thirty second clip. Subway passenger, street performer, restaurant customer, or motorbike stuntman - the British action legend just seems like the perfect and at the same time worst possible fit for each persona, giving off his own patented mix of calm, collected, somewhat menacing and yet humorous vibe. It just works and you should definitely check it out for yourself! The ad part of the video is most-likely intentionally subtle, but the main emphasis is on the morphing and playful nature of the LG G5. You can learn more on the modular design in our in-depth

Microsoft Edge browser will get native ad-blocking support

Image
At its ongoing Build 2016 conference, Microsoft has confirmed that the next version of its Edge Web browser will include native ad-blocking support. This will make Edge one of the few exiting Web browsers - the list currently includes Opera (developer edition) and Brave - that offer such a feature. Aside from native ad-blocking, there are many other features that the new version will bring along, such as support for extensions and integrated Bing translator. It's worth mentioning that Microsoft Edge currently has a very low market share - the figure stood at around 1.5% in December last year. Via

New Skype update brings Bots feature

Image
As part of its ongoing Build 2016 conference, Microsoft rolled out a new feature to its Skype messaging app. Dubbed Skype Bots, the feature is described by the company as "a new way to bring expertise, products, services and entertainment into your daily messaging on Skype." The Redmond, Washington-based company demonstrated the feature by showing off a Cortana integrated Skype client where-in the virtual assistant acted as a Skype Bot to help users identify people, places, and things in their messages, as well as display more info about them. In addition, it could also perform other tasks, including calendar management, travel and hotel bookings, and more. The Skype Bots feature is currently only available through messaging, although Microsoft says that in future, it will be available for audio and video calling as well. Here's an example of a Skype Video bot: The Bots feature is rolling out to Skype's iOS, Android, as well as Windows client

Google’s VR View will embed VR content into apps and websites

Thanks to Google, there is now going to be a web viewer for VR which can be integrated right into a website along with apps for Android and iOS. The new HTML and JavaScript code is up on Github for you to start embedding your vacation 360 images right away. I've embedded a sample VR View of the coral reefs just above this text. You'll need to be using the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari all for desktop, iOS 8 and above, or KitKat 4.4 and above for mobile. The desktop viewer is a simple image viewer which can go fullscreen and allows the users to click and drag around a VR image just like you would click and drag with Google Maps’ Street View. Google is also announcing its first native Cardboard SDK for iOS. Google providing these source codes for developers is a step toward a larger adoption of VR viewers and VR-enabled content embedded within webpages and incorporated into more iOS and Android apps.

HoloLens developer kits are shipping to devs today

Image
HoloLens is Microsoft’s foot in the door for incorporating virtual reality into the world of every day computing. With that said, today’s Microsoft event brought more information about the HoloLens and what it could mean for developers. Microsoft has mentioned at today’s event that it is now shipping these HoloLens developer kits to those development teams who have signed up and pre-ordered the $3K dev kit to those who fit Microsoft’s qualifications. The following companies have shown interest in HoloLens for developers. Microsoft has also announced that it has released its first full HoloLens application called Galaxy Explorer on the Microsoft Store and on Github where the source code in its entirety will be available for developers all over the world to tinker with or incorporate into their own HoloLens projects. Keeping developers in the loop is among the most important things that should occur with introducing a brand new platform since if there is no d

Samsung tablets will be used in the Portuguese football league for match reports

Image
Mobile devices and sports generally mix quite well, especially when we're talking about sponsorship deals signed by phone and tablet makers with various clubs or national teams. Samsung has however decided to go one step further in Portugal. Samsung tablets will be used in the Portuguese football league to compile and file official match reports. These will be used by the staff of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP), making their jobs much easier through a dedicated app installed on the tablets. Previously, such forms had to be filled out by hand and then faxed over to the league's official board. This means the reports reached their targets long after matches ended. From this point on though everything is transmitted electronically, after Samsung has helped LPFP digitize its operations. According to LPFP President Pedro Proença, "this application is a technological leap that helps us to provide better service to all clubs and all t

Windows 10 Anniversary Update announced, will be out in the summer for free

Image
At its Build conference today Microsoft has officially announced the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. This will be the first major update for the company's latest operating system version, and so far it's been known only by its codename - Redstone. The Windows 10 Anniversary Update will roll out sometime this summer, and it will be free for everyone running Windows 10. It will bring with it support for Windows Hello biometric ID in more apps, including the Edge browser - so you'll be able to sign into websites with your fingerprint. The Linux command line shell will be in too, alongside a smarter Cortana (who you can tell to send files to colleagues, for example), and a unified Windows 10 and Xbox app store. Perhaps the biggest new feature in the update is the addition of the Windows Ink system. This is all about taking stylus support up a notch. So you'll be able to do things like jot down something along the lines of "Call Joe at 9 pm"

Buy an iPhone from T-Mobile, get half off a second one

T-Mobile has a new deal for you if you're a fan of Apple's iPhones. Starting tomorrow, the magenta carrier will give you half off one iPhone when you purchase two of them. So you pay the full price for one iPhone, and half of it for the second one. That's the theory. In practice, you'll find that the discount will come to you in the form of a prepaid MasterCard. Oh, and you need to add a line for the second device. This line needs to remain active until at least July 15. The deal works with any iPhone model currently sold by T-Mobile, so you can pick and choose from the iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, and iPhone 5c, or the new iPhone SE. You can take advantage of the promotion even if you've already pre-ordered an iPhone SE. The second iPhone needs to be cheaper or the same value as the first, as you'd expect. The iPhone SE officially becomes available tomorrow, after a full week of pre-orders. Source | Via

Sony Xperia Z3 now available for just $250 in US

Image
Sony's flagship smartphone from 2014 - the Xperia Z3 - has received a price cut in the US, where retailer B&H Photo is currently selling the device for $249.95, down from its usual price of $449.95. That turns out to be a solid $200 discount for a device that is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 801 chipset, sports a 5.2-inch full HD IPS display, and has 3GB RAM and 20.7MP main camera. A quick look at Amazon reveals that the retailer is selling the same model for around $300. It's worth mentioning that the deal is available for the next few hours only (11 as of writing). So, those interested in taking advantage of it need to act fast. Source

Apple has signed a deal with MLB to provide iPads to teams

Image
Microsoft struk a lucrative advertising slash professional tool deal to provide Surface tablets to the NFL, and now Apple is after the same kind of exposure. The Cupertino giant has opted for a quite different sport and went after Major League Baseball, but other than that, the premise of the new deal seems to be the same. In exchange for exposure during games, Apple will provide specially tailored iPad Pro units to each team in the league, to be used as professional tools. The devices in question will be of the bigger 12.9-inch variety (more visible on camera, I guess), bear the team logo and be tailored to its specific needs, like a digital playbook of sorts. Some potential features could include access to historical game statistics and various data analysis on the fly even down to pitcher-batter match simulations. On the software part of things, the iPad Pro's will be running a specialized iOS app, called MLB Dugout, built in-house by MLB’s Advance Media

Canonical and Microsoft are working to bring Ubuntu to Windows 10

Image
By all accounts, this won't be done through the use of virtual machines, nor containers, which still seem to be in development within project Barcelona. Rather, the idea is to bring over the Bash shell experience, along with all of its powerful console tools, to run on top of Windows libraries and the Linux subsystem, introduced in the new Windows 10 Redstone build. While running Bash on Windows is in no way a new concept, having it integrated within the OS is a whole different thing, which will surely clear the way for many new powerful Linux tools on the platform. This might not be all too exciting for regular Windows users, of course, other than some potential UI modding, if desktop environments like Unity, Gnome, KDE and the like become available as well. However, it is a move aimed squarely at increasing the popularity of Windows 10 as a powerful development environment. Source

Apple updates Maps with Nearby search and Flyover in more countries

Image
Apple has updated its Maps service to expand the Flyover and Traffic support in a number of countries. Now Austria, Denmark, Japan and Switzerland proximity-based Nearby search results on iPhone and iPad. As for the Flyover - you can now enjoy 3D imagery with photorealistic bird's eye view of Augsburg, Braunshweif, and Hanover in Germany, Newcastle upon Tyne in England and the Japanese prefecture of Niigata. Finally, in Turkey Maps has been updated to support real-time traffic data. Apple has done a nice job with this one, but has to put in a lot more effort in Maps before it stands a chance against Google Maps. Via

LG G5 pre-orders in Germany come with free Cam Plus grip

Image
Mainland Europe is getting the LG G5 a bit later than the US and South Korea, but Amazon Germany will start selling the flagship in the middle of the month and will offer a free Cam Plus grip. The phone - available in Gold, Silver and Titan - costs €700 and the grip alone is €100, but using the LGG5AKTION code, the grip becomes free. The deal is valid for orders until April 16. The grip helps shooting with an additional 1,200mAh battery and hardware controls - photo shutter and video recorder keys, plus a zoom dial. The LG 360 Cam and LG B&O DAC are available too, but you'll have to pay for those - €267 and €150 respectively. Source

Twitter update brings image description for the visually impaired

Image
Twitter is rolling out an update for its iOS and Android apps that should make using the service a bit easier for the visually impaired. Starting today, users can now add descriptive or alternative text to images that they attach to their tweets. You get 420 characters, separate from the 140 for the tweet, to describe the image however you want. The text will then be read out by assistive technology or presented in braille on supported hardware, so the visually impaired can not just read the tweet but also get an idea of what the attached image is. Twitter is also making this available to third party clients, which should be adding it in later updates. Source

New Google Photos update brings ability to undo edits

Image
Google has rolled out a new update to its Google Photos app that brings along the ability to undo any edits that you make to images. Previously, this wasn't possible, with the app creating a new copy of the image each time an edit was saved. Thankfully, that won't be the case now. To take advantage of the feature, first open an image containing edits, then get into the edit mode by tapping the edit icon at the bottom (next to the share icon), and finally select the 'Undo edits' option that appears when you tap the overflow menu in the upper right corner. "Sometimes it takes multiple edits to get a photo just right – or you change your mind and decide the original was perfect just the way it was," Google Photos team wrote in a Google+ post. "With today’s update for Android, editing is now fully reversible and non-destructive. So you can save your edits or save a new copy of the photo – either way, the original photo will remain unto

Watch the ceramic back of the Xiaomi Mi 5 take a lot of abuse in this official stress test

Image
The Xiaomi Mi 5 has a lot going for it. A Snapdragon 820 SoC, up to 4GB of RAM and an impressive 16MP camera with a 4-axis OIS system, to name a few. But the handset is also dressed to impress in the flagship circles it intends to mingle with, especially in its top-tier ceramic back variant. This material choice is definitely not unheard of, take the OnePlus X for instance, but it still seems to raise some flags with many users, who seem to typically associate ceramic with a brittle dinner plate or perhaps a vase. In an effort to address this, Xiaomi has released a stress test video, putting said back through quite a bit of abuse. Now, we only have one complaint about the clip and its has to do with quality. If you are going to showcase how well the surface handles, it is generally a good idea to have enough pixels, so we can see the end result. Still, the phone did look quite well and there is no denying that the clip is incredibly amusing. Take a quick look f

Audiophile-targeted vivo X6S and X6S Plus are now official

Image
Chinese manufacturer vivo has added a pair of new devices to its lineup today. The new handsets come as direct descendants to vivo X6 and X6 Plus and are all but identical on the outside. This is just as well, since the metal shell still looks elegant in silver, gold or pink and reusing the chassis should save some R&D budget, which could be better spent elsewhere. The devices both come with an even better audio hardware than their predecessors. The smaller X6S is equipped with an AKM4375 32-bit DAC, while the bigger X6S Plus has a ES9028 DAC within a YAMAHA YSS-205X audio processor at its disposal (the same that is used in the vivo X5Max). But the upgrades goes beyond audio as well. The MediaTek MT6752 powering the 2015 models has been swapped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652. While not the top of the line, it still packs four powerful Cortex A72 cores and another four A53 ones plus the Adreno 520 GPU. Displays seem to be unchanged at 5.2" and 5.7"

BlackBerry Priv caught running Android Marshmallow in a video

Image
Last we heard about BlackBerry Priv's Marshmallow update, was in January and the word was that the update isn't coming anytime soon - the company had said that roll-out details will be revealed sometime during the ongoing quarter. It's March 31 today, which means the quarter has almost ended, and sadly, there has been no official heads-up from BlackBerry on this front until now. However, here's something that'll surely bring a smile on your face and should reassure that the update is nevertheless coming - a video featuring Marshmallow-powered Priv. There's currently no information on exactly what changes the update will bring, but hopefully we'll know more soon. Via

Samsung Galaxy Amp Prime with 5-inch display and Android 6.0 launched on Cricket for $150

Specs-wise, the 4G LTE handset sports a 5-inch super AMOLED display, features a 5 MP main camera, and runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Other features include Ultra Power Savings Mode to extend the standby time, Easy Mode for beginners and elderly, as well as support for one-handed operation. The device carries a price tag of $149.99, and is available both online and in stores. Aside from signature Samsung features like Quick Launch camera and Ultra Power Savings Mode, the phone comes with an outdoor mode, which the carrier says lets users increase the screen brightness for 15 minutes for better vi

iOS 9.3 most stable release from Apple, more stable than Android 6.0

Image
According to a new report by app analytics firm Apteligent , Apple's latest iOS 9.3 build is the most stable new release by the Cupertino-based company in years. The report revealed a 2.2% crash rate for iOS 9.3 in the past eight days. Other major releases, including iOS 8, 9, and 9.2, had their crash rate cross the 3.2% mark in the same time-period. In addition, the report revealed that iOS 9.3's rate of crash was also better than that of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which saw a crash rate of 2.6%. It's worth mentioning that iOS 9.3 has also had its own share of problems - it's roll-out was temporarily put on hold for some older models due to an issue with the update procedure. Via

Two Lenovo phones with same specs spotted on GFXBench

Image
A couple of new Lenovo-branded smartphones have been spotted on GFXBench, and curiously, both have same specs. They are powered by MediaTek MT6735P SoC and sport a 5-inch HD display. RAM is 2GB, while internal memory is 16GB. The camera department is handled by an 8MP rear unit and a 5MP front shooter. Both come with Android 6.0 Marshmallow pre-installed. While nothing else is currently known about the devices, their model numbers - XT1700 and XT1706 - does indicate (XT followed by four numbers) that they are actually Motorola handsets, with reports suggesting we could be looking at next-gen Motorola Moto E, or a Lenovo Moto E may be?. Microsoft announced new Cortana features, Outlook, Android, and third-party app integration

Image
Microsoft has announced some new features which will be rolling out to Windows 10 customers in the next coming months. Cortana is now going to be incorporated with Outlook and will be able to check your email and calendars in order to help you keep track of your own emails. Cortana will be able to take context of your emails and things you commit to and will automatically create events that correspond with such events. Cortana will also be able to send an email to a contact with an attachment. The demonstration shows the presenter ask Cortana to “Send Chuck that PowerPoint I was working on last night.” Then, Cortana found a PowerPoint and asked the presenter if it was the one he was referring to. Along with these powerful Outlook integrations, Cortana will also be able to show you your text messages from an Android phone, right on your Windows 10 desktop. Cortana will even move your calendar events around in order to accommodate your new event. Also comi

Beta Marshmallow build of OxygenOS for OnePlus 2 is now accessible to all, not OTA though

A couple of weeks ago OnePlus started soak testing its update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the OnePlus 2 with a few users to check for bugs and whatnot. That test was not an open one, but things have changed now. Starting today you too can download and try a beta build of Marshmallow for the OnePlus 2, namely OxygenOS 3.0. You do need to manually flash it though, because it's not available as an over-the-air update. That's because the Chinese company wants to make sure all possible kinks have been ironed out by the time the OTA rollout starts. The good news is that this build will receive OTA updates, so when the final Marshmallow build hits the OnePlus 2 you'll get it too even if you've decided to test the beta. You can find the download page for the test build over here . The new software comes with all the goodies that Google packed into the Marshmallow release, of course, but also a new OnePlus Camera UI, a new wallpaper picker, better Shelf UX,

ZTE A2017 visits AnTuTu as well, could be the next Axon model

Image
The Huawei P9 and iPhone SE aren't the only smartphones that have been revealed to have been put through the paces of the AnTuTu benchmark today. The ZTE A2017 joins them, and this might just be the Chinese company's next Axon-branded handset. Earlier this month the A2017 was spotted in the GFXBench database sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Now those specs have been confirmed by AnTuTu's info screen, along with other hardware details. The ZTE A2017 has a QHD touchscreen (which GFXBench pegged at 5.5"), a 20 MP rear camera, an 8 MP selfie shooter, 64GB of storage, and it runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The phone has managed to score an impressive 140,086 points in AnTuTu, which is more than the Xiaomi Mi 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S7. That's quite impressive, so ZTE's next flagship device will definitely be no slouch. Via

MIUI Global Beta ROM based on Marshmallow now available

Image
A few days ago the stable release of the MIUI ROM based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow was released for the Xiaomi Mi 3, Mi 4, and Mi Note in China. As of today, the stable Marshmallow-based MIUI 6.3.17 is available in Global Beta and can be installed on the Xiaomi Mi 3, Mi 4, and Mi Note outside China. Being a global ROM means the devices outside China can use Google Play Services and Play Store. Xiaomi Mi 5 was the device to introduce the Android Marshmallow with MIUI 7, but Xiaomi seems to be working hard on bringing the update to as many devices as possible. If you have an international Mi 3, Mi 4, or Mi Note, then you can follow the source link below for download and installation instructions. Thank you, Sagar, for the tip! Source

Apple iPhone SE enters AnTuTu, matches the iPhone 6s Plus score

Apple iPhone SE is pretty much an iPhone 6s within a smaller chassis. It runs on the same Apple A9 chip with 2GB of RAM, has the same 12MP rear camera, but a smaller and lower-resolution screen. The iPhone SE has passed the AnTuTu 6 benchmark already, and you can check it out how it stacks against its stablemates. AnTuTu 6 Higher is better Sort by Label Sort by Value Apple iPhone 6s Plus 137420 Apple iPhone SE 134358 Apple iPhone 6s 129990 Obviously, the iPhone SE offers stellar performance. We expected nothing less since it has one of the fastest chipsets on the market and the lowest resolution screen (1136x640 pixels) to power. The iPhone SE begins shipping tomorrow in many markets worldwide. We'll be grabbing one for a proper review, so stay tuned. Source

Huawei P9 stops by AnTuTu with Kirin 955, scores short of 100K

Image
There's now only a week until the Huawei P9's official launch, scheduled for April 6. Can't hurt if we get to know a few more bits in advance though, this time courtesy of AnTuTu. The benchmark maker has listed the upcoming Huawei flagship, complete with specs and test results. Huawei P9 on AnTuTu (click for full size) The concise specsheet names just the basics, among them a Kirin 955 chipset with Mali-T880 MP4 GPU, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Display resolution is quoted to be FullHD, and previous info points to a 5.2-inch diagonal. As you probably know, the P9 will have a dual-camera setup on the back. You may think that the "8MP + 13MP" entry in the camera field indicates the resolutions of those two cameras, but no - that's AnTuTu's customary way of specifying front and rear cameras. We're also given a glimpse into the P9's performance. The 96,043 score is nothing spectacular in today's world where the Sam

Oppo says the F1 Plus is identical to the recently-announced R9

Image
We have been hearing a lot about the Oppo F1 Plus lately and most fans have come to expect it as the next iteration of the Oppo F1 "selfie expert", with hints of an even better front camera experience and a fingerprint reader. This all sounded exciting, but today Oppo brought an end to that, clarifying that the F1 Plus won't be a new model, but merely the Oppo R9 for international markets. That definitely clears the air and puts to rest the various rumors about the handset. As per the recent China announcement of the R9 and R9 Plus, the F1 Plus should be equipped with a 5.5-inch, FullHD AMOLED display, fitted inside a shell measuring 151.8 x 74.3 x 6.6m, with a minimal bezel size of 1.66mm. The rest of the specs sheet includes a Mediatek Helio P10 chipset with four of its Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz, and the other four at 1.0GHz, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The camera department offers an interesting twist that might just be worthy o

HTC 10 shows its face again, black version pictured

Image
HTC 10 is going official on April 12 but we know pretty much everything there is to know about company's next big thing. We know the design is a hybrid between the One M9 and One A9, we know about its Quad HD AMOLED screen and Snapdragon 820 chip, the possibility of a Snapdragon 652 model, its rumored retail price at €740, even the reported April 15 as a lunch date. HTC has begun a marketing campaign with teasers over the social networks, but the leaks are quite more revealing than HTC's hints. Today's leak show the black flavor of the HTC 10 shot next to its silver sibling. We've seen its metal chassis leak already in detail, though, and this gloomy shot only shows yet another view of the black version. Fingers crossed HTC did manage to keep something from leaking and will surprise us on April 12. Source • Via

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 to come with Snapdragon 823, possible 3D touch

Image
The Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is due for a replacement and we're expecting it in the coming months. Rumors of it kicked off a few weeks ago stating that it may have a dual-edge display, but today we have some more concrete info on the specs of the Mi Note successor. Xiaomi Mi Note (the first one) Starting with that supposedly curved display, the source says that it will be 5.7 inches in diagonal like the previous model. Resolution will be QHD, and a 3D touch pressure sensitive capability is being considered. The Mi Note 2 will be powered by either a Snapdragon 820 or an 823 chipset (higher clock rates?). RAM will be 4GB or even 6GB, and storage options will include 32/64/128GB, with a possible 256GB variant too. The camera will feature the 16MP Sony IMX298 sensor, complete with OIS. Powering things will be a 3,600mAh battery, with some form of fast charging allowing the charger to supply up to 18watts. Mightily impressive specs there, and most of them seem p

First Oculus Rift delivered by Oculus CEO himself

Image
The Oculus has come a long way since the early Kickstarter days, but this Saturday it reached an important milestone - the first Rift headset was delivered. And this wasn't a regular FedEx delivery either, Palmer Luckey, co-founder and CEO of Oculus himself, handed over the headset to its lucky recipient - Ross Martin, a developer from Alaska. The whole thing was streamed live on Facebook (the home of Oculus) and you can tell Martin was excited. He says he couldn't sleep and even showed up at his office (where he usually receives deliveries) during the weekend to receive the package. Luckey was visibly excited too - he's been waiting for this moment since 2009. If you missed the livestream, you can relive the event here: There's a bit more of Luckey and Martin in a second post . 33% of Galaxy S7 buyers in South Korea have signed up for the company's Galaxy Club program. That's a good start for the company's upgrade plan, which offers participants to trade-in their old smartphone after 12 months of ownership and get one of the latest available. The Samsung Galaxy Club is also available in Singapore and the UK. The service, which is similar to Apple's Upgrade Program, has you paying a monthly fee and allows you to upgrade when the new flagship comes around 12 months later. There are also additional incentives for joining the program, one of which is a one-time 50% discount on out-of-warranty handset repairs. The company has said that it will make the program available in more markets in the coming weeks and months. Source | Via

Transmission BitTorrent client now available for Windows

Image
After being available on OS X and Linux for around a decade, popular BitTorrent client Transmission is now also available for Windows. According to developer Mike Gelfand, Transmission for Windows is similar to other clients both in terms of user interface and features. Gelfand revealed the Windows client is still under active development, and addition of more features in the near future is on the cards. "The only difference right now is that it runs on Windows. We’ll see how it goes, some features could be added later on which are specific to Windows and aren’t needed on other platforms," he said. Those willing to download and use Transmission for Windows can do so by heading to the Source link below (look for the .msi files there). Source | Via

Xiaomi Mi 5 video review

Image
Xiaomi Mi 5 is the company's latest flagship and we already did a full-blown review of the device. Now it's time to sit back, relax and watch our Xiaomi Mi 5 video review. The Xiaomi Mi 5 is built around a 5.15" IPS LCD display of 1080p resolution and our 64GB review unit packs a Snapdragon 820 chipset with 3GB RAM. However, the 128GB model has 4GB of RAM. The phone sports a beautiful design and at the back has a 16MP f/2.0 main camera with phase detect autofocus, OIS and dual-tone LED flash. As we said in our written review, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is one of the most beautiful, most powerful, and most capable smartphones to date and there is little to dwell on it. You should seriously consider it, if it's available in your region.

Instagram for web gets Explore and Notifications

Image
Instagram has pushed a small update for its website, that gets two important additions. The site now features buttons for Explore and Notifications. The Explore section shows people you might know and would want to follow. The Notifications section, as you might imagine, shows all your notifications. These features were only accessible on the app before. Unfortunately, you still can't see your friends' activity on the site and that's still limited to the app. The app also gets some minor server side changes. The like, comment, share buttons are slightly redesigned, and the additional options button below an image has been moved above. These changes are being rolled out without needing an update.

Google Cast is the next evolution of Chromecast, now with an accent on third-party support

Image
Google's own video and audio casting platform seems to have undergone a significant image change. If you are currently using a Chromecast device, you might have noticed that after its last update, the Chromecast app is now called Google Cast. Not much has changed within the update in terms of functionality, but the re-branding is definitely more than mere cosmetic work. Like the new name suggests, Google is now branching out and trying to convey the message that its casting solution is no longer a proprietary thing. Besides its own dongles, the platform is now supported by a growing number of smart TVs from vendors like Sony and Sharp, as well as speakers. The list of third-party partners is also growing, Philips, B&O PLAY, Harman/Kardon and Raumfeld are all lined up to release audio equipment and VIZIO is the latest company to join in the Google casting ranks with both audio and video offers. It's new P-series TVs are now filly compatible with the st

A sneak peek at Microsoft's upcoming Skype Universal app

Image
Now that Microsoft is vigorously pushing Windows 10 and the new Universal Windows Platform for apps, it is only natural that the first development efforts come from the US giant itself. In light of this, there seems to be a new Skype UWP app on the way. It is still in beta, but the folks at mspoweruser.com got their hands on an early copy on both Windows 10 PC and Mobile for a first look and some screenshots. As a quick reminder, in theory, the code running on both the PC and the mobile environments should be identical with a self-adapting interface. This is the essence of the new Universal Apps platform - write ones and deploy across the whole Microsoft ecosystem (desktops, phones, tablets and even the Xbox). This makes examining applications like this all that more intriguing, as it offers some first-hand experience as to how well the cross-platform approach actually works. Skype UWP app on PC It would appear that at this stage, the app is working a l
