Lost Planet 3

TGS: Getting the Job Done in Lost Planet 3 Sometimes the job is "robot boxing champion." After using a grappling hook to climb into his robo-rig, beardy hero Jim proceeds to punch a space scorpion with his drill fist. This is before he grabs its pointy tail with one of his mech’s arms and uses the other to cut it off, neutering the threat and leaving it exposed for another robot beatdown. All he wanted to do was get a satellite dish open and online. Some days on the job are better than others. Lost Planet 3’s robot segments, like past Lost Planet games, excel over the competent third-person action . The on-foot shooting bits are fine, but nothing more – little about the linear cover-based shooting galleries in the Tokyo Game Show demo did anything to highlight interesting over-the-shoulder action. But the objectives you work towa

NEVEC's existing Thermal Energy reserve is running low, and the fate of the Coronis mission depends on the natural source of the energy supply being located. Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel Review

Image
Playing Dumb. → March 29, 2013 Army of Two has lost its way. While it never really grew into a huge franchise, it deserves much better than this lacklustre third instalment. After two decent games, The Devil’s Cartel is a mediocre sequel that seems to have forgotten what the series is all about. One thing Army of Two used to be about is how it brought a cheesy bro-fisting attitude to its co-op shooting. Refreshingly, it never took itself very seriously, with a brash yet rather endearing love of the stupid. For example, after surviving a firefight, brothers in arms Salem and Rios could break out the air guitars to celebrate.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Review

Image
Shoot it in the head. → March 21, 2013 While games such as Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City stand as shining examples of how you can take a known franchise and lovingly make it into an awesome game, more often than not, licensed titles end up disappointing fans. That’s what The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct does; it gives licensed games a bad name. It’s a damn shame, too. On paper, this concept is what I, as a fan of the AMC TV show, would love to see in a game. Acting as a prequel to the show, Survival Instinct tells the story of motorcycle-riding redneck Daryl Dixon from the mom

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct Review

Image
This first-person action game allows players to assume the role of the crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon, alongside his brother Merle, on a haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct takes the undead and brings them out of the TV show and into console gaming systems in a terrifying way. The iconic walkers will relentlessly hunt down players like their television counterparts, using a combination of sight, sound and smell. As Daryl, players will need to tread carefully throughout each new area they explore. Once discovered, it doesn't take much to attract an unstoppable horde of undead walkers, so every threat needs to be assessed, and every situation analyzed. Players will have to choose between whether to stay and fight while risking a gruesome death or using stealth to avoid the undead. No place is truly safe for Daryl as he makes his way through the Georgia countryside in this new,

Dead Space 3 Awakened Review

Image
Original, creepy, memorable, silly. → March 15, 2013 This review contains Dead Space 3 story spoilers. Consider yourself warned: MEGA SPOILERS AHEAD. Dead Space 3 Awakened grafts a grisly tale of Marker-induced dementia onto the end of the original Dead Space 3 experience, and in three brief chapters did more to unsettle me than the entire game managed. Disturbing, creepy, and entertaining, it’s great fun – though Awakened’s satisfying but brief story gets a bit silly and serves as a vivid reminder of the ho-humness that preceded it.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 Review

Image
One shot. One kill. One note. → March 19, 2013 If sniping in real life – outside of the whole morality issue – was as easy as it is in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 , then a few soldiers probably could save the world. Unless you’re playing on the hardest mode, bullet-drop indicators and omniscient AI teammates make sure you know exactly who to shoot and when, taking almost all the tension out of pulling the trigger. Ghost Warrior 2 ultimately does exactly what I feared the most when I started: it takes one of the highest forms of shooting skill and makes it repetitive and uninteresting. Almost every level in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2’s brief four-or-so-hour campaign boils down to the same thing. You arrive on one of these pretty, CryEngine 3-rendered jungle scenes either alone or with a partner, and then move fr

Razer Edge Gaming Tablet Review

Image
Ambitious, exciting, but ultimately impractical. → March 28, 2013 The Razer Edge is an ambitious, but flawed product. The feeling of being able to play Crysis 3 or BioShock Infinite on a device not much larger than the Surface Pro is exhilarating and at times unbelievable, but it's also an expensive, less effective alternative to a gaming laptop. The Edge is a 10.1-inch Windows 8-based tablet with the internals you'd expect to find in a low- to mid-range gaming laptop. Its base configuration is priced at $999 and comes with a 1.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GT 640M LE (1GB), and a 64GB SSD. Bumping up to the Razer Edge Pro nets you a faster 1.9GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, the NVIDIA GT 640M LE (2GB), and either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage priced

PlayStation 4: The Coolest Stuff You Probably Didn’t Know

GDC reveals tantalizing tidbits about Sony’s next machine. While there have been morsels of PlayStation 4 information doled out since the console’s coming out party , Sony really hasn’t had the chance to speak at length about the product since February. At least, not until today. Here in San Francisco, Sony Computer Entertainment America Senior Staff Engineer Chris Norton hosted a Game Developers Conference panel titled “Developing for the PS4.” While a lot of the speech was heady technical stuff, there were some very interesting reveals. Here they are.   1 The PSN Friend Limit Is Increasing Norton said at the beginning of the conference, “Core gamers are our primary audience.” PS4 is going to serve that group by increasing the number of PlayStation Network friends from the current cap of 100 to… well, Norton didn’t say. He just said it

Is Outlast the Scariest Game Ever?

Image
We played the next great horror experience and (barely) lived to tell about it. Outlast is a gorgeous, Amnesia-inspired first-person horror experience that takes the genre back to its roots. You play as the world’s bravest/stupidest writer, who decides that maintaining his journalistic integrity entails sneaking in to an abandoned insane asylum and checking out what’s what. There are no weapons to be found in Outlast , so you’re forced to endure the darkness armed only with a night vision camera and the ability to run. And just in case you were wondering, said camera drains batteries like an electronic device with a vendetta, and you're going to have plenty of reasons to run. Before my demo, the team at Red Barrels, which is comprised of ex-Ubisoft designers who worked on Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, told me about some of the crazy things they’d seen the brave attendees of PAX East do while playing their game. Some bolted out mid-demo, others stumbled out unheal

GRID 2 Details its European Racing Spirit

Image
From Paris to Portugal. The European clubs, cars and locations of GRID 2 have been unveiled, revealing more of what we can expect when the game arrives in May. The three new clubs have been detailed in a new trailer, which you can check out below. The Eliminacion team are the guys who pioneered the elimination events, so expect some serious competition when you go up against them in their Japanese imports in those. Euro Rand, meanwhile, are the kings of circuit racing while Divizéro specialise in time attack events and driving hot-hatch sports cars. In terms of new cars, the Volvo S60 BTCS, the Gomez Competition, the BMW Motorsport 320 TC and the Chevrolet Cruze Touring Car will all be available in the game. The BMW and the Chevrolet have both proven their worth by winning championships in the past, while the Gomez appeals to privateers and the

PlayStation 4 Getting Blacklight: Retribution, Primal Carnage Genesis

Spelunky, Divekick and Metrico will hit Vita plus much more headed to all PlayStation platforms. Sony has confirmed new games for all PlayStation platforms, including a ton of titles for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. While we knew Blacklight: Retribution is coming to consoles, Sony has now confirmed that it will hit PlayS tation 4 and will still be free-to-play. It will be joined by Primal Carnage Genesis, which will also hit PlayStation 4 and is “a story driven, episodic single player adventure that takes place in a world where dinosaurs have been brought back to life.” Blacklight is created by Zombie Studios and Primal Carnage comes from Lukewarm Media. The pair join the previously announced The Witness as three of the first self-published titles on Sony's new console.
