Oppo tops Chinese smartphone market in Q3, vivo claims second spot

Image
According to data shared by IHS Research analyst Kevin Wang, Oppo has dethroned Huawei to become the top smartphone player in China. The former sold 22 million smartphone units in the third quarter, compared to 18 million by the latter. Not only Oppo, vivo also surpassed Huawei, recording a total of 19 million units in sales in Q3. It's worth mentioning that Huawei had sold a total of 32 million units in Q2, so that's quite a sharp drop. Moving on, the fourth and fifth spots were claimed by Xiaomi and Apple - while the former sold 12 million units, the Cupertino-based company recorded a total of 11 million units in sales in the quarter. Coral blue Samsung Galaxy S7 edge 4G+ to arrive in Taiwan and Singapore

Image
The Note7’s Coral blue offering turned out to be a popular color choice. Unfortunately for many, Samsung had to discontinue sales of the Galaxy Note 7. So, no S-Pen (for now) but that doesn’t mean you can’t have Samsung’s soft-blue-and-tinge-of-orange color combo, as it will come to the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. Currently, Samsung plans to release the Coral Blue edition of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge with 4G+ in both Singapore and Taiwan. This edition will be available starting on November 5 in Singapore and November 1 in Taiwan from what appears to be in a 32GB configuration for now. The smartphone will feature the 4G+ radio for Asian carriers and, of course, the coral blue paint job. The new handset will be priced at 1090 SGD (about USD 788) in Singapore while in Taiwan, the same device will go for NTD 24,900 (about USD 787). If we do get a coral blue version for the US, we don’t think it’ll have any updated hardware. It will likely be the same hardware that ...

The TV app supports all popular streaming services, but you have to have them installed on your device. You can do it within the app and once you authenticate within the service, TV adds all new content to its library, lists, and suggestions. With the TV app Apple wants to change the way you are watching TV and interacting with it. There is live Twitter feed support within the app, where you can see all relevant tweets real time without losing sight of what's happening. The app looks promising and can work on Apple TV, iPhones, and iPads. It ...

Samsung is planning "significant changes" to quality assurance after Note7 drama

Image
What is done is done and and at the end of the day Samsung has to bear most, if not all of the consequences of the unfortunate Galaxy Note7 battery fiasco. As for the aftermath, there are definitely more than a few sad fans and it comes as no surprise that Samsung stands to loose a "heartbreaking amount of money". However, the image problem is arguably something even more severe and long-lasting that needs to be addressed. This is precisely what Samsung did at a a General Meeting of Shareholders held today. Among other announcements, the Korean giant made an official commitment to better quality assurance in order to prevent such problems in the future. Vice Chairman & CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon didn’t go into any detail, but his statement definitely came across as optimistic and determined if nothing else: Throughout its 47-year history, Samsung Electronics has faced and overcome numerous challenges, creating opportunities through innovation … Samsung ...

No, the Xiaomi Mi Mix doesn't actually have a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio

Image
Xiaomi captured people’s imagination with the “bezel-less” Mi Mix - a spark of true innovation in a time when smartphone design has become very stale. But we want to dispute Xiaomi’s claims of 91.3% screen-to-body ratio. Here’s the thing. We took this official image (left) and measured it in Photoshop - both the phone and its screen (if you want details on how: we used the tool that counts the selected pixels). Indeed we got pretty close to the claimed 91.3% number, but while we were zoomed in on the image, we noticed that the digitally-rendered view of the Xiaomi Mi Mix does not accurately represent the real device. Here’s an actual photo of the phone for comparison (right).     Xiaomi Mi Mix: Official image • Photo (by Android headlines ) Even to the naked eye, these bezels are not the same, not even close. This will reduce the screen-to-body ratio. Not that it changes a great deal, the Mi Mix continues to look stunning and we’re very eager to c...
