While the free upgrade was once codenamed Blue , a public preview of Windows 8.1 is available starting today. Most notably, Windows 8.1 brings back the Start button , a point of sincere contention for many Windows 8 users. The full release of Windows 8.1 is still scheduled for some time later this year. Writing on the Windows Blog , Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc runs through some of the basic improvements included in the Windows 8.1 update. The "Metro" tiles in Windows 8 are now more customizable in terms of size, allowing users to set the tiles as "really big" or "really small." LeBlanc notes this change is most applicable to tablets, where scaling down the tiles allows for more screen real estate. Deadpool talks a big game but delivers a standard action experience that is the turducken of videogame parody: It is what it parodies what it is. Playing through Deadpool feels about as schizophrenic as its main character. On the one hand, it’s zany, wacky, goofy, silly, sophomoric, and many more adjectives that Thesaurus.com suggests. This is a funny game – that is, if you’re into dick jokes and casual sexism. If not, then Deadpool – the character and the game – will grate on you like a buzzsaw on hard cheese. On the other hand, much of the Deadpool gameplay experience is formulaic and safe…so safe you might think developer High Moon Studios is playing some sort of self-referential “hey, isn’t it ironic how normal this is?” meta-gag on you. More sequel-sized expansion than true successor, Company of Heroes 2 repeats many of the original CoH’s feats, now on the Eastern Front. When I played the original Company of Heroes in 2006, I struggled to think of how a World War II real-time strategy game could look or play a whole lot better than it does. Apparently, so has its developer, Relic, because seven years later Company of Heroes 2 is strikingly similar. There are, of course, subtle visual improvements and numerous hit-or-miss gameplay tweaks as the series transitions from the Western Front to the Eastern, but this is very much a new spin on the same game. Of course, the original CoH has held up remarkably well (if you haven’t played it, you absolutely should) so I welcome something that looks and plays like it with open arms, even if it’s not necessarily a better version.
